Gretchen Lamphere

July 01, 1944 ‒ December 16, 2017

Delaware, Ohio

Gretchen A. Lamphere, age 73, of Delaware passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Grant Hospital in Columbus.

She was born on July 1, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan to the late John and Genevieve (Timm) Drury. A graduate of Redford High School, Detroit in 1962, she then attended Michigan State University where she would meet her future husband Allen Lamphere whom she married in 1963.

Moving to Delaware in 1972, Gretchen became a realtor, which became her passion over the next 40 years, until the very end. Award winning, she operated Gretchen Lamphere a RE/MAX Affiliate. She felt it was her calling to help families find a home, not just a house.

Humble and with a wonderful sense of humor, she possessed a huge heart for the underdog. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Family Promise. Gretchen gave to and supported causes far and wide, most especially PIN and the Delaware Free Store, where she donated thousands of coats over the years.

Described as genuine, honest, and trustworthy, she was a member and supporter of St. Mary Church. Work was her hobby, but she treasured time spent at the family cabin at Boyne Falls, Michigan with her beloved Golden Retriever, Honey. Gretchen loved Delaware, Christmas, and of course selling real-estate. She will be remembered for her generous ways, one whose door was always open, and love of family.

She is survived by her children: Joseph M. (Mary) Lamphere of Marion, Susan M. Lamphere (Bob Schaefer) of Lorain, Kristine A. Lamphere (Bryan Gandee) of Westerville, daughter-in-law: Joelle Lamphere (Scott Scribner), grandchildren: Jordynne Bowie, Evelyn Lamphere, Hope Gandee, Bernie Lamphere-Scribner, brother John (Erin) Drury of MI, sister Barbara Wolford of CO, brother-in-law Gerald Tibaldi of MI, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of dear friends.

She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 16 years Allen in 1980, treasured son Matthew in 2005, sister Alice Tibaldi in 2007.

Friends may call 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Dr. at W. William St., Delaware, Ohio 43015. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church, 82 E. William St., Delaware. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity, 305 Curtis St., Delaware, Ohio, Family Promise, 39 N. Washington St., Delaware, Ohio, Turning Point, 330 Barks Rd., Marion, Ohio 43302, Delaware Free Store, 193 E. Central St., Delaware, Ohio, or donate a coat to the Delaware Free Store.

  • I was shocked and saddened to hear about Gretchen’s sudden passing. She was a great lady and a great friend very dedicated to the industry. She will surely be missed by many. God Bless!

  • I’m truly devastated. She was my mentor in real estate and a dear friend. Prayers and love to the family.

  • I am totally broken hearted. We met 30 yrs. ago She was a true professional & a dear friend. We loved our pets & loved to argue about politics but always remained friends. She will be so missed & I will think of her every day. God bless the family.

  • My son bought a home and it was Gretchen I recommended to him. Everything that could go wrong with this house did but if it wasn’t for Gretchen who was so experienced and smart, he would never have gotten that house closed and bought. She worked so hard to make sure all went through on it. By far, she was a true caring agent who truly loved her clients and wanted happy homes. It wasn’t about selling a house, it was about connecting families with HOMES. (big difference) I have loved this woman for years.

I am so sad to hear this but I always knew when her day came, she would still be working, still finding that special home for a special family. She left this Earth doing what she loved so much. What a worker she was and such an independent, strong woman with so much to mentor to others. I am sure many real estate agents out there learned from her. What a big loss to this community and what a big loss to me as a friend. I sent my sorrow to her family and all her Michigan friends, too.

  • Ron and I want to express our sincere condolances to Gretchen’s family. We became close friends back in 2002. What a great lady. We will miss you dear.

We send along our heartfelt prayers to Joe, Sue,Kristy and their families and pray that the peace of Jesus will enfold all of you.

Robert and I were talking today about a great story when we bought our house in Delaware where Gretchen was showing us how to use our fireplace in the house. Needless to say the flames flew out and knocked her on her behind and we all had a good laugh. Singed eyebrows and all!! It didn’t take long to feel like we had been friends for life. One favorite memory was when, after a few visits, she suddenly announced “your house and mine are built from the same plans!” We both had tweeked our homes some, but we just could not stop laughing about the irony of the coincidence. We laughed til we cried. Loved that lady! Prayers for the family. Kay and Bill
