Gladys P. Rhodebeck, age 87, of Mount Gilead, went to be with the Lord on Monday evening, November 19, 2007, at the Morrow Manor Nursing Facility in Chesterville, where she had been a resident for nearly three years.
She was born in Champaign County, Ohio, on June 30, 1920, the daughter of the late Harry N. and Lena G. Zerkle Gordon. She was one of twelve children.
A graduate of Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1938, Gladys married her loving husband, Vincent Rhodebeck, soon after graduation on June 30, 1938. Together they spent their adult lifetime enjoying vacations at Lake Erie and in later years spent their winters in Florida. They celebrated 60 years of marriage shortly before his death in 1998.
For over 60 years, Gladys was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, a Church trustee for 10 years, and called on home bound members for over 40 years.
Gladys was a 50+ year member of Beta Progress, a member of the Art Guild and the Morrow County Republican Women. She also served as a Girl Scout Leader.
One of her passions was owning and operating a lady’s dress shop, The White House, in Mount Gilead for twelve years. Gladys also enjoyed working in her flower gardens and lawns, and they always looked immaculate.
She will be sadly missed by her two daughters and one son-in-law: Sally Blue of Mount Gilead, and Sandy & Dave Decker of Mount Gilead; four grandchildren: Vince (Tara) Blue of Calgary, Canada, Kimberly (Mark) Althouse of Marion, Todd Decker of Columbus, and Suzanne (Eric) Hanft of Mount Gilead; five great grandchildren: Kai Blue, Cody and Brooke Lyons, and Emily and Katie Hanft; three brothers and two sisters: Don Gordon, Alice (Don) Walker, Paul (Midge) Gordon, David (Rita) Gordon, and Phyllis (Fred) Zahn, all of the Mansfield area.
Including her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Carl, Ralph, and Bill Gordon; and three sisters: Kate Samples, Helen West, and an infant Nancy Gordon.
Her family will greet friends on Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ron Heasley officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.
