Gladys Townley, age 89 of Sunbury died Thursday morning, November 20, 2008 at Grady Memorial Hospital.

She was born on June 7, 1919 in Moscow, Kansas to the late Orval and Birdie (May) Wise. An area resident since 1933, she attended Harlem School. For 28 years she worked in the meat department for Sunbury IGA, known for her ability to select the best cut of meat.

A fifty year member of the Condit Presbyterian Church, she was active in all church activities and the Friendly Club. She enjoyed square dancing, playing euchre with the North Condit Euchre Club, traveling, and camping with the Triangle Traveler Camping Club. A wonderful creative quilter, she was also a collector of dolls and thimbles.

Steadfast and family centered, she was most proud of her grandchildren and home. Always stylish and ornery at times, she always looked for humor in life and will be remembered for her care and concern for others.

She is survived by Daughter: Erlene Girberd of Sunbury, Son: Bud & Linda Townley of Springfield, 4 Grandchildren: Scott (Carol) Girberd, Debbie (Scott) Strain, Sheri (Wade) Woerner, Bryan (Dawn) Townley , 11 Great-grandchildren: Arrin, Katie, Taylor, Lucas, Joseph, Lorrin, Mitchell, Mindy, Zac, Amanda, Justin, Brother: Gene (Jean) Wise of FL, Sister: Betty (Tim) Perrine of NY, Brother-in-laws: Edward (Freda), Robert (Dorothy) Townley, Nettie Reigel of Westerville, numerous Nieces , Nephews, and special friend Jane Cockrell.

Preceded in death by her husband of 62 years: J. Dudley Townley in 1998, son-in-law: Gary Girberd in 2007, Sister: Gail Townley, Brothers: Everett and Earl

Friends may call Sunday 2-6 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Alexander McDougall officiating, interment will follow in Trenton Cemetery.
