MANSFIELD: Gerhart “Gary” Raff peacefully passed away Saturday morning, October 31, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was 73
Gary was born April 24, 1942 in Vojlovia, Yugoslavia to parents Christian and Theresa (Holzworth) Raff. The family lived in Austria before immigrating to the United States in 1955.
He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1961. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for six years with the 1486th Transportation Company.
A beautiful young lady by the name of Theresa Ferrise caught his eye at the downtown Third Street Market. They were married October 28, 1967 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Gary was a talented and dedicated toolmaker for 31 years at Therm-O-Disc. He enjoyed photography, racing, watching cooking shows, traveling to Lake Erie and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Theresa Raff of Mansfield; daughter Heidi (Travis) Schroeder of Mansfield; Son Gary (Claudia) Raff Mansfield; grandchildren Cooper, Cruz and Emily; brother Christian Raff of Catawba Island; brother-in-law Sam (Ernie) Ferrise; sisters-in-law Angie Ferrise and Mary Sansalone; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Judy Raff
His family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a memorial service will be held at11:00 a.m. Melvin Schroeder will officiate and a graveside service will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Military honors will be performed by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
Gary was a strong supporter of education and had a deep love for animals. Contributions in his memory can be made at the funeral home to the Richland County Humane Society and Msgr. Dunn Foundation for Education.
