MANSFIELD~ Gerald L. Friend of Mansfield passed away of an extended illness in his residence Friday morning January 8, 2010. He was 72.
He was born December 30, 1937 in Mansfield to Floyd M. and Mildred (Thoma) Friend and attended Mansfield Senior High School. He served a brief time in the U.S. Army.
A resident of Mansfield his entire life, Gerald was a firefighter with the Mansfield City Fire Department for 15 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Wayside Mission and enjoyed tinkering with cars and wood working, which was his passion. The ultimate host, he entertained a coffee group in his home every morning for the last four years.
He owned and operated his own CB shop years ago. But what he loved the most was his Lord and Savior, family and friends.
Gerald is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Neal Oldaker and his daughter Tally L. Friend all of Mansfield; grandchildren Jaysen Harris, Ryan Harris and Levi Wade; and great-grandchildren Izic, Tyler, Mahaley, Aubrey and Rebecca.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Diane C. (Poulton) Friend, on March 12, 1988; and two sisters Donna Wert and Shirley Fleming.
The Friend family will receive friends Sunday, January 10, 2010 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, 350 Marion Avenue (Former Finefrock Funeral Home), where his funeral service will be held Monday, January 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. Pastor Ken Kimes will officiate and Fireman’s Last Call will be offered by the Mansfield City Fire Department. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions to American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association may be made at the funeral home.
