George L. Smith, age 76, of Howard, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his family after an extended illness.  He was born in Union County, Ohio, on May 19, 1942 to the late John and Vivian (Vilfer) Smith.

He was employed for 24 years at Chattanooga Glass and TRW for 18 years before retiring in 2007.  George was a diehard sportsman.  He loved to fish, it was his passion.  He instilled his love of the outdoors to his children.  He was a member of the Church of Christ East Side.  George graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1962.  He enjoyed mowing, steam engines, feeding the birds, his friends, but most of all he loved his family.

He is survived by the love of his life, Betty (Hall) Smith, married for 57 years; his children, Brian (Diane) Smith of Mansfield, Bradley Smith of Mount Vernon, Mark Smith of Creston, Amy (John) McCurdy of Mount Vernon, Jenny (David) Snow of Frederictown, Becky (Fred) Hoeflick; grandchildren, Corbin Smith, Hannah Smith, Chelsea (Matt) Wallace, Miranda (Bryant) Stough, Abagale McCurdy, Bailey Hoeflick, Curtis (Natalie) Smith, Ashley (Kyle Klinkner) Smith, Stazia Sparks, Zane Smith, Melissa Liming, Noah Smith, Penny Smith, Lucy Smith; great-grandchild, Korbin Klinkner; sister-in-law, Gwen Smith; brothers-in-law, John Phillips and Doug Rinard; many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, George is preceded in death by his sisters, Joan Phillips and Evelyn Rinard; and a brother, Bob Smith.

Friends may call on Monday, March 11, 2019 from 5 PM till 7 PM at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High Street Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at 1:00 PM.  Burial to follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
