Gary L. Van Nostrand, age 71, of Mount Vernon, died Saturday May 5, 2012 at his residence following an extended illness. Gary was born August 24, 1940 in Mount Vernon, to Guy L Van Nostrand Jr. and Lucille (Dotson) Van Nostrand Long, graduated from the Mount Vernon Academy in 1958 and had spent his lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. He was a Certified Nursing Home Administrator and a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Gary had owned and operated the Northside Manor Nursing Center in Mount Vernon and had maintained a charter fishing boat “Happy Hooker” at Lake Erie for several years. He also was owner and operator of Van Nostrand Trucking. Gary was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Surviving are his wife Ruth Ann (Kelly) Van Nostrand; children Gary L. (Paula) Van Nostrand Jr. of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Vicki (Gerald) Erskine of Lewisburg, West Virginia, Lori (Steve) Wycoff of Marysville, Ohio and Kristi (Peter) Schumacher of Morrow, Ohio; grandchildren Corey and Paige Van Nostrand, Alyssa, Amanda and Alexander Erskine and Taylor Wycoff; his mother Lucille (Dotson) Long of Charlotte, North Carolina; the mother of his children Georgia Van Nostrand of Morrow, Ohio; sisters Pat (Jeff) Davis of Charlotte, North Carolina, Susan (John) Peters of Clearwater, Florida, and Susan (Dan) Snyder of Mount Vernon, Ohio; brothers Richard “Rick” (Mary Jo) Hawkins of Mount Vernon, Ohio and James (Pam) Hawkins of Houston, Texas; brothers-in-law Sheriff Gene (Michelle) Kelly of Springfield, Ohio and Chuck (Eileen) Kelly of Sarasota, Florida; uncle Clinton Dotson; cousins Georgann Kinney, Pam Vybiral, Doug Dotson and Tom Ute and Many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his father Guy L. Van Nostrand Jr.; step-parents June Van Nostrand and Dr. Russell C. Long and trusted canine companion “Rusty”.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1pm at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High Street, Mount Vernon with Pastor Lou Toscano officiating. Burial will follow at Mound View Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 11am until time of the service at 1pm.

Gary loved his family and friends. His generosity and kindness for others will never be forgotten. An accomplishment he was most proud of was when he rescued “Rusty” a stray. He and “Rusty” enjoyed many wonderful years of companionship.
