Venice, Florida
Formerly of Marion, Ohio

G. Edward Murphy, age 92 of Venice FL and formerly of Marion, passed away on December 17, 2018 at his home.

He was born in Marion, Ohio on September 2, 1926 and was the son of Dr. Frank V. Murphy and Marguerite Kirchner Murphy. At the age of 18, Ed enlisted into the U.S. Navy and three weeks later found himself headed to Saipan in the South Pacific during WWII. Upon returning home after the war he attended the Ohio School of Banking, Kent University Ohio School of Installment Credit, and Xavier University before beginning his banking career. Ed joined The Fahey Banking Company in 1954. His career spanned over 20 years with the bank, working his way to Vice President before retiring and moving to Florida.

Ending his bachelor status officially, Ed married his bride-to-be, Shirley Merchant in Englewood, Florida in 1978. During their 38 year marriage together they enjoyed traveling to Ireland and spending their summers in the North Georgia mountains with their dog Max. Ed has truly missed his wife Shirley since her death in 2016.

Also predeceased are his siblings, his only sister Mary Rita McGlew (husband, James), and brothers, Dan (wife, Roseanne), Frank (wives, Frances and Deanie), Bob and Jackie. Ed is survived by his sister-in-law, Phyllis Murphy (husband, Bob) of Nokomis, Florida, 29 nieces and nephews and their extended families.

He was fondly known as “Uncle Ed” not only to his family, but friends, neighbors, caregivers, doctors, and his many friends at “The Tuscan.” He was a favorite Uncle to many and we will miss him dearly.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 29, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 251 North Main St., Marion at 10AM with Fr. Thomas Buffer officiating; Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
