Frieda Marie Wise

April 03, 1908 ‒ January 20, 2005

Bellville, Ohio

BELLVILLE: Frieda Marie Wise, 96, of Poorman Road, Bellville, died Thursday evening January 20, 2005 in a granddaughter’s Poorman Road home following a short illness, surrounded by her devoted family.

She was born April 3, 1908 in Lexington to Edward Monroe Tinkey and Bertha Oleta Jane (Brooks) Tinkey in the home that would become the original Buck’s Restaurant.

A lifelong area resident, Frieda was a homemaker and farmer, who served as one of Bellville School’s original Gray Ladies. She also worked as a meat cutter at the former Barnhill’s Central Market in Bellville.

An accomplished musician, Frieda could pick up nearly any instrument and play it by ear. She leaves fond memories of filling her home with refrains of “Sweet Georgia Brown” from her organ manuals. A talented bluegrass fiddle player, as a member of the Tune Twisters, she traveled the church and nursing home circuits.

Frieda was always the “Nursing Grandma”, welcoming with open arms every sick grandchild ~ all the way down to a limping bunny.

Active in the lives of her grandchildren, she’d plop them in the sidecar of her BMW motorcycle, or collect them around a table for a game of rummy or euchre, at which she would of course cheat…but then, she would cheat at solitaire, too.

Remembered for her kind and generous heart, Frieda’s kitchen table became a magnet in the area for coffee, conversation, and genuine friendship.

She is survived by a son William J. Wise of Bellville; grandchildren and their spouses Shirley Wise Metcalf, Gary and Connie (Wise) Barr, Chip and Patty Wise and Anthony and Paula Wise all of Bellville, William “Willie” Wise of Johnsville, Wendy and Brian Moore of Mount Vernon, and Kip and Jill Wise of Mansfield; great grandchildren and their spouses Matt and Erin (Metcalf) Craw, Ian Metcalf, Heather (Wise) Orr, Travis Wise, Carrie, Hallie and Ken Barr, Sara and Samantha Wise, Tricia and Chelsea Wise, Nichole, Callie and Kyla Moore; great great grandchildren Cleo Craw and Brennan Orr; a daughter-in-law Jeanne Wise of Mansfield; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Franklin “Hank” Wise in 1982, and by a son Eugene Edward “Diz” Wise on January 20, 1999.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 23, 2005 from 2-5 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held Monday at 11am. The Rev. Douglas J. Pretorius will officiate. Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad or the Palliative Care Unit (Comfort Care) of Knox Community Hospital may be made at the funeral home.
