Frederick “Dale” Layton, Sr.

Frederick Dale Layton, Sr., age 78, of Sunbury, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2019.

He was born February 25th, 1941 in Monongalia County, WV, son of the late Thomas and Harriett (Bowmar) Layton. Dale married the love of his life, Jewell G. White, on September 17, 1960.

Dale was a 1958 graduate of Big Walnut High School. He served as a Deacon of the Sunbury Christian Church, and was a Golden Eagle (charter member) of the Sunbury Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #3614. He worked as a supervisor for American Glass Smith , retiring in 2011.

Dale loved to golf, and played in the Minor Leagues Baseball as a pitcher while in high school. He enjoyed traveling across the country, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Dale is survived by his significant other, Wanda Mantor, son Dale (Heidi) Layton, Jr., Sunbury and daughter Melanie (Edward Shuminski, Jr.) Layton, Sunbury; grandchildren: Joseph (Kendra) Johnson, II; Daneill (Drew) Johnson; great-grandchildren Jessica Johnson,  Khloe Johnson, and Dev Garabrant; brother Charles (Mary) Layton, Fredericktown; sisters: Nellie Salyer, Delaware, Shirley Johnson, Oklahoma City, OK, and Roxie (Dave) Basford, Hilliard.

In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his wife Jewell, brothers Bill, Archie, Lee Roy, John, and Perry, and sisters Mary York, Dorothy Williams, Lillian DeWalt, and Lovell Pyle.

Friends may call Monday, July 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 N. St. Rt. 61 at St. 3 in Sunbury, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Billie Jean White will officiate.
