Frederick C. Myers, 93, died Tuesday, August 8th at Country Club Retirement Center in Mt. Vernon, OH after a brief illness.
Fred Myers was born May 22, 1913 in Delphi, Indiana and grew up in Galion, Ohio. He graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in Music Education and earned a Master’s degree at Ohio State after serving in the Army during World War II. Fred and his wife Marjorie were married in 1943. They resided in Elkhart, Indiana for 56 years before moving to Mt. Vernon in 2002.
Fred began teaching music in Elkhart, Indiana the fall of 1946. He directed junior high school band and grade school band, as well as giving individual instruction to beginning students. He taught for years at Roosevelt Junior High, moving to Pierre Moran Junior High when that school was built. Teaching song-flute classes to 4th graders each May, and having many of them as students from 5th grade through 9th grade was something he very much enjoyed.
Fred was active in St. John’s Episcopal Church. After retiring he was a member of the Elkhart Exchange Club for many years, repeatedly winning state awards for his writing of their newsletter. He also volunteered with the Elkhart Historical Society.
During the four years he resided in Mt. Vernon he attended both St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Harcourt Parish in Gambier, where he also sang in the choir. He was a member of the Kenyon Community Choir. At Country Club Retirement Center he participated in In-The-Know and helped found the Top Hats men’s organization. He was an advocate of continuous lifetime learning.
He is survived by his son, Philip Myers of Monroe, NY; by his daughter Janet Slack of Gambier, OH; by his grandson Robert Slack of Greenville, SC, and by great-granddaughter Sofia. His sister, Velma Myers, resides in Galion, OH.
He was preceded in death by his wife in February of this year; earlier by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Friends may call on Saturday, August 12, 2006 from 1-2 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon with a service to follow at 2 PM. Interment will be in Elkhart, Indiana following services at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elkhart at 6:30 PM Monday, August 14, 2006. The family will greet friends in Elkhart from 5-6:30 PM in the Common Room at St. John’s.
