Fred J. Ocheltree
November 12, 1936 ‒ March 19, 2011
Fred Ocheltree was not just a woodworker, he was a master craftsman – and artist, who happened to use the medium of wood. From his home woodshop he would produce fine furniture, made from solid hardwoods of walnut, cherry and oak. He would make a craft item if specially asked, but he much preferred making furniture, clocks, cabinets – even whole kitchen cabinetry sets.
The man who could turn a simple board into a family heirloom passed away Saturday evening March 19, 2011 in his Bellville home, surrounded by his adoring family. He was 74.
Born Fred Junior Ocheltree on November 12, 1936 in Sutton, WV, he came north with his family while he was still a teenager. His family settled just a few doors down from Bellville’s Walker family, and Fred “stole” his sister’s best friend when he married Ida Mae Walker on April 5, 1958.
Fred worked as a mold setter with Therm-O-Disc in Mansfield, and retired on February 22, 1998 with 30 years of service.
He was an avid hunter.
He is survived by his wife Ida Mae (Walker) Ocheltree; their sons and daughters-in-law Stephen & Kimberly Ocheltree and Jeffrey & Crystal Ocheltree all of Bellville; grandchildren Tony & Dee Ocheltree, Amberly & Chris New, Katie Ocheltree and her fiancé Matt Ruckman, and Brittany Ocheltree; great grandchildren Stephen, Maggie, Hunter, Callie, Addie, Liam, and one on the way; step brother Eddie & Loretta Linger of Loudonville; step sister Janet & Ed Alford of California; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Janet Ocheltree of Bellville, Janet Ocheltree of Burlington, WA; Norma Jean Wolfgang, Mary Alice Snavely, Rodney “Top” & Martha Walker, Dana Robinson, Ron “Butch” & Ellen Walker, Maurine & Jim Walters and Bill Walker all of Bellville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth H. Ocheltree, his mother Margaret M. (Hyer) Ocheltree Linger; his step father Ray Linger; a granddaughter Jenny R. Ocheltree; a sister Chelva Jean Troupe; brothers Jackie, Donald and John Ocheltree; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Jack & Gerry Walker, Albert Wolfgang, Jr., Homer Snavely, Jim Robinson and Lois & Clark Gaddis.
The Ocheltree family will receive friends Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where his funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. Pastor Ken Kinley will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park.
