Florence May Walker
January 03, 1907 ‒ August 19, 2007
Mount Gilead, Ohio
Mount Gilead- Florence Kline Walker, member of a pioneer Congress Twp. family and life long resident of the area, died on Sunday, August 19th, 2007. She was 100 years old on January 3, 2007.
A devoted Christian, homemaker, grandmother, historian and gardener, Mrs. Walker was the great granddaughter of Margaret and Dan Mitchell of Pennsylvania, early settlers of Congress Twp. She also was a great, great granddaughter of John Swallum, the donor of the land on which Pleasant Grove Church of Christ was built and where she was a member for many years.
As a 1st and 2nd grader, she walked through fields and woods to and from the old Pleasant Grove School, which still stands. She traveled by buggy or sleigh to the Williamsport School to complete her elementary education.
The eldest child of Mattie M. Mitchell and Charles R. Kline, Mrs. Walker graduated from Mt. Gilead High School in 1926, doing child care work for a local family so she could have a place to stay in the village during the school term. After high school, she attended Mansfield Business College and later worked several years at the First National Bank in Mt. Gilead.
In 1930, she married Willis Walker, a carpenter and farmer. Their first home was in Johnsville, but most of their 67 years together were spent on her parent’s farm near Williamsport, where she was born.
Mrs. Walker was a long time member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ, which her grandparents, John and Mary Kline helped to build. Her later years were spent with the Mt. Gilead Church of Christ.
Well into her 90’s, she cut grass, kept a large garden, prepared delicious meals and baked bread for family and friends. Her greatest joy came from serving others! She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her son Arden (Patty) Walker of Morrow Co; daughter, Doris Nikolaus of Nashville, TN. Four Grandchildren; Stephanie (Scott) Mason of Akron, OH, Keith (Sharon) Nikolaus of Nashville, TN, Colonel Brent (Bonnie) Nikolaus of Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, Jewel Ann (Eugene) Keenan of Franklin, TN; Eleven great grandchildren, Shannon (John) Ott, Ryan (Lisa) Nikolaus; Kelsey, Walker and Caroline Nikolaus; Tyson and Maggie Keenan; Mark and Sarah Mason and two great, great grandsons, David and Joshua Ott. Her brother Harold (June) resides in Mt. Gilead. Her sister, Martha Bowsman and brother Howard Kline preceded her in death.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at Shauck Cemetery on Thursday, August 23rd at 10:00 am conducted by the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead.
