Ferne Ernst, 87, of Galion passed away, Thursday, June 5, 2014 after a three month illness at her residence surrounded by her immediate family.
She was born January 9, 1927 in Oberlin and was the daughter of James and Fern (Holtshouse) Ballance.
Ferne was married to Val Heiby and he preceded her in death in April 17, 1968 and she later married James Ernst on May 20, 1977 and he also preceded her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Vicki (David) Kmetz of Sleepy Hollow, Ill.; step-daughters, Betsy (Louis) Kraft of Jonesboro, TN and Linda Bireley of Gray, TN; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren and a sister Patsy Johnston of St. Augistine, FL.
Ferne is preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mary Lohr and Ruth Hoffman.
Ferne was a 1945 graduate of Galion High School and lived in Galion for most of her life. She worked at the former Galion Dresser for 27 years and was a member of the ladies auxillary of the American Legion Scarbrough Post #243, Galion. Ferne was a past member of the First Lutheran Church of Galion, but was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline. She loved cats and enjoyed reading.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Snyder Funeral Home Richardson Davis Chapel in Galion at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Diana Seaman officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday starting at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Crawford County Humane Society or the Galion Public Library in care of the funeral home.
