Evelyn O. Leeth
February 23, 1912 ‒ September 11, 2006
Evelyn O. Leeth, age 94, of Marion, died early on Monday morning, September 11, 2006, at Saint Ann’s Hospital in Westerville following an extended illness.
She was born in Greenfield, Ohio, on February 23, 1912, the daughter of the late Creight Marion and LuLu Viola (Denning) Simmons. Evelyn was a graduate of Leesburg High School in the Class of 1930.
On April 4, 1932, Evelyn married her loving husband of over 65 years, Everett H. Leeth, in Newport, Kentucky, and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1997. She was a homemaker, and loved to cook and sew. Full of life and zest, in her younger days she loved to dance and listen to music. As a child she played with clothespin dolls, and at her death she possessed a sizeable doll collection. She remained a child at heart. Her cat, Princess, was a great comfort to her.
Her husband’s job took them about the country, and as far as Panama, until they moved to Marion in 1957. She was a resident of Marion until 2005 when her health began to decline and she moved in with her daughter.
During her time in Marion, Evelyn was a member of the United Methodist Church, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and the Eastern Star.
With a fond heart for the simple pleasures in life, Evelyn enjoyed watching the birds dance, flowers growing, and the taste of a fully ripened tomato picked straight from the vine. She loved watching her grandchildren grow and took great joy in teasing them.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Mary (John) Simpson of Westerville; two granddaughters Deborah Ann (Tony) Banfield, and Brenda Kay (Tony) Nicholson; five great-grandchildren Nathan Lee & Taylor Renee Robinson, Andrew & Jean-Luck Banfield, and Cole Nicholson; and one brother Ralph (Alma) Simmons of Ludlow Falls, Ohio.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara Ellen Leeth; brothers Hobert, Melvin, Harold, and Howard Simmons; and her sisters Lillian (Frank) Virtue and Gladys (Dudley) Cherry.
The family will greet friends on Wednesday from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home, 73 East Main Street, Leesburg, Ohio. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Leesburg, with Rev. John Fitzgerald officiating.
