MOUNT VERNON, OHIO: Evan Morris Adams, age 75, of 929 West High Street, Mount Vernon, OH, died Saturday evening May 9, 1998 in his home following an apparent heart attack.
He was born December 18, 1922 in Chicago, IL, to the late Victor F. & Esther M. Palm Adams, and was graduated from El Monte (CA) High School. Mr. Adams served in the US Navy during W.W.II with the rank LT., as a carrier based fighter pilot serving with Air Group 23 in the Pacific Theater. He earned the decorations of Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Presidential Unit Commendation.
He earned his BA in Anthropology from the University of Southern California, and his Masters of Divinity Degree from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, IN. From 1952 to 1961 he served as a founder and superintendent of Brethren Navajo Gospel Mission & School in Counselors, NM. From 1961 to 1970 he served as Southern
California Director for Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship.
In 1970 he moved to Santa Barbara, CA, to accept the position of Chaplain of Westmont College and in 1974 founded the Carmen Deo Community Center for Christian Studies. He moved to Richland County, Ohio, in 1985 to restore the Rummel Mill outside Butler, OH, and also operated a Bed & Breakfast there. Since 1989 he has served as an Adjunct Professor in Humanities at North Central Technical College, Mansfield, OH.
He moved to Mount Vernon, Ohio, in November of 1996 and recently accepted the position of Director of the Knox County Historical Society. He taught restoration at the Knox County
Career Center and operated Restorations Associates, a historical building consultant firm.
He served on the Ethics Board of MedCentral Health System; was a member of the Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums and the USS Langley Association; and was board member of Mission Aviation Fellowship. He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church, Mansfield, and First Presbyterian Church, Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his wife M. Joan Baer Adams, whom he married June 27, 1947; three sons and daughters-in-law Dan E. & Karen Adams of Mount Vernon, OH, Tim J. & Mary Beth Adams and Mark J. & Cindy Adams all of Santa Barbara, CA; two daughters Laurie J. Adams of Gilroy, CA and Mary Beth Adams of Santa Barbara, CA; ten grandchildren; two brothers Earl & Betty Adams of La Habra, CA and Edwin & Fran Adams of Temple City,
CA; and a sister Edna M. & Don Norbie of Greeley, CO.
Friends may call Wednesday May 13, 1998 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Snyder Funeral Home, Bellville, OH(419-886-2491) where the funeral will be held Thursday at 11 AM. Pastors Tim Barber and Don Muncie will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Peters Cemetery near Mansfield.
The family prefers memorial contributions be made to Grace Brethren Navajo Radio Ministry and may be made at the funeral home.
