Eugene Adkins, age 71, of Leesburg , Florida and formerly Marengo died Sunday November 29, 2009 at his residence.

He was born on February 21, 1938 in Huntington WV to the late Emmett Sr. and Ina (Phelps) Adkins. Graduate of Marengo High School in 1956, he worked 36 years as a skilled tradesman with General Motors plant in Ontario, retiring in 1995.

He lived the majority of his life in the Marengo area surrounded by his family and numerous friends. For the last 13 years he resided in Florida. A member of the Centerburg Enterprise Baptist Church he was a true outdoorsman. With a love for nature, he enjoyed hunting, mushrooming, and being amongst the trees of the woodlands.

Generous to a fault, his heart was always open to everyone. He was a father and grandfather to many more than his own. Eugene was happiest and at his best spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years: Janet (Burch), daughters: Lisa (Mike) Keen of Fredericktown, Lori (Lloyd) Coleman of Mt. Gilead, Lana Rogers of Fredericktown, 9 Grandchildren: Jessica, Loren, Justin, Leslie, Gar, Lindsay, Paige, Abby, Shayla, Great-grandson: Caiden, 12 Brothers & Sisters: Ruth Pukansky, Emmett Jr. (Bet), Betty Stephens, Dorothy Coleman, Enoch (Linda), Eloise (Chuck) Freeman all of Marengo, Ellet (Betty) of Cardington, Laura Mailey of Marengo, Mary (Jerry) Fouts of Delaware, Joney (Cindy) of Chesterville, Joyce (Dick) Wertz, and Jimmy (Sharon) of Marengo, Brother-in-law: Dick Addison of New Carlisle, Sisters-in-law: Rose of Cardington, Kim of Marengo and numerous nieces, nephews, and longtime friend of 49 years Bob Baldwin.

He was also preceded in death by son: Michael in 1986, grandson: Gene in 2001, Sister: Hester Addison in 2005, and Brothers: Franklin in 2006 and Ernie in 2008, brother-in-laws: Paul Stephens Jr. in 2001, Floyd Beanie Mailey in 2008, and nephew Joey Adkins in 2002.

Friends may call Thursday from 4-8 p.m. p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury where services will be held Friday 11 a.m. with Pastor Rolland Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the Marengo Cemetery.
