Ernest M. Baker, Sr.

March 06, 1929 ‒ September 09, 2009

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD ~ You don’t get a nickname like “Curley” without a full-head of naturally wavy hair. Ernest Baker’s thick curvy locks were his “crown and glory”.

He passed away Wednesday evening September 9, 2009 in his home following a short illness. He was 80.

Born Ernest M. Baker on March 6, 1929 in Grayson, Kentucky, to Thomas Sr., and Nora (Wicker) Baker, he attended Olivehill Kent schools.

In the early 1950s, Ernest served with the U.S. Army.

After returning from military service, family members tried to fix-him-up with a local homecoming queen, but it was her sister that caught Ernest’s eye, and on February 9, 1954 he was married to Shirley A. Roark in Carter County, Kentucky.

A quiet man, Ernest had a no-nonsense personality ~ you just couldn’t fool him. Loyal and fair, his integrity extended into the workplace. For 37 years he worked with Convey-All, first as a machinist and welder and later as plant supervisor, where he treated his workers with dedication and devotion ~ just like family. He retired in 1997.

That spirit of devotion and dependability became important to his family. Always willing to help in times of need, he felt it his calling to care for his family.

Though he enjoyed hunting small game and fishing from his 19-foot Galaxy, he was most content to be at home on his back porch, surrounded by the kids ~ often with a great grandbaby on his lap. He dearly loved children, and his magnetic personality attracted them to him.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Ernest M., Jr. & Tina Baker of Perrysville, James Thomas & Lisa Baker of Bellville, Jeffrey Lee Baker & Janette Prosser of Mansfield, and Allen Baker & Al Waddell of Columbus; daughters Sharon Baker of Mansfield, and Regina Lynn Drouhard & Denny Kovinchick of Mansfield; grandchildren Jeremy Baker, Joshua Baker, Jared Baker, Lyvennia & Jon Paul Sigler, Seth & Sabrina Wyatt, Daniel Drouhard, Jeremy & Tara Weikle, Jeb & Kendra Weikle, Jessica & Matt Rhine, Jacquie & Ryan Francis and Brandon & Kaylie Yarger; great grandchildren Annette Baker, Logan Wyatt, Landon Wyatt, Andrew Baker, Ayden Baker, Jerick Baker, and Addison Sigler; brothers William “Jack” Baker of Grayson, KY, Thomas, Jr., and Barb Baker in Arkansas, Harlan Baker of Tupelo, MS, and sisters Inez Baker of Columbus and Lillian Applegate of Frankfort, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley A. (Roark) Baker on April 19, 2007; a son Timothy Baker in 1983; brothers Nick Baker and Manford Baker and a sister Pauline Phillips.

The Baker family will receive friends Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, 350 Marion Avenue (Former Finefrock Funeral Home).
