Ernest D. Calkins, age 62, of Johnstown Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus.

He was born on April 29, 1949 in Mount Vernon to the late Roger and Dorothy (Horn) Calkins. Ernest was employed and retired from T.R.W. after 29 years of service. Ernest enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, tying flies, attending ballgames, and playing horse shoes. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Ernest was a veteran serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his son John Calkins of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Rita (Mark) Heaton of Sunbury, Ali (Kevin Cox) Lowe of Mount Vernon; five grandchildren, Taylor Lowe, Kiley Lowe, John Lowe IV, Zain Heaton, Rhea Heaton; three brothers, Larry (Amy) Calkins of Mount Vernon, Doug (Kathy) Calkins of Mount Vernon, Gary Calkins of Mount Vernon; a sister Kim (Jeff Casey) Calkins of Newark; the mother of his children, Tina K. Calkins and special friends, Kimberly and Amanda Hagans.

Besides his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by his sister Nancy Lane.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5 – 7 PM at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A service will be held on Friday beginning at 11 AM with Rev. Wade Wolf officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veteran’s Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
