Ernest B. “Ernie” Webb

January 19, 1936 ‒ August 07, 2009

Chesterville, Ohio

You’ve been a shining example of how one should live life, with a warm smile, an open heart, and a kind soul. Thanks for showing that to my family. Those kind words were expressed to Ernie Webb in the days before his death.

He died Friday afternoon August 7, 2009 at his residence in Chesterville surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 73.

He was born in Centerburg, Ohio on January 19, 1936 the son of the late Bev “Bud” and Grace (Bostic) Webb.

On May 9, 1954 Ernie married Sidney Charlene Shaffer in Johnsville. Together they experienced 55 wonderful years and the joys of raising 8 children; children which he loved with a truly unconditional heart.

A man with a quiet faith, Ernie attended the Sparta Advent Christian Church.

A jack-of-all-trades, Ernie had numerous occupations and was skilled in multiple facets. Some of his specialties included welding, plumbing and truck driving. He also worked as a machinist for H.P.M. where he retired and also owned his own business, Webb’s Soft Water.

As diverse as Ernie’s work life was, his hobbies and interests were equally unique. He was a huge motorcycle fan, especially Honda Gold Wings. Some will remember his intelligence as an inventor; the Horse tractor stood out to the family. He also enjoyed pitching horseshoes, many times at the huge family gatherings he loved so much. There is also a 35 year old Mule named Ruben that held a special place in his life.

Ernie’s legacy will be that of a man with a beautiful family and faithful friends that cared for him deeply. His clever sense of humor was witty, yet never boastful or hurtful and always done out of love.

His granddaughters will miss breakfast with their grandpa, which they did as often as they could.

Ernie was a member of the Cancer support group at Mansfield MedCentral and also to a group out of Bellville. He enjoyed his breakfast groups and was a member of the Butler Senior Club.

In addition to his wife Charlene, who survives in Chesterville he will be missed by their children Greg and Pauline Webb of Chesterville and their children Amber, Shawn, and Kayle; Sherry Webb of Edison and her children Sara, Travis, Anthony, and Christian; Joan and Randy Orsborn of Fredericktown and their children Aaron, Lucas, and Kara; Dixie and Rick Pryor of Edison and their children Chelsea, Elise, and Seth; Phil and Mary Beth Webb of Marengo and their children Phillip, David, and Evan; Julie and Jeff Griffith of Chesterville and their children Josh and his wife Audrey and their children Quinn and Jude; Eric, Kyle and his wife Stephanie, and Leslie; Shelley and Keith Sparks of Chesterville and their children Caitlin, Michael, Matthew, Johnathan; Kerry and Rob Ervin of Johnsville and their children Chad and his wife Brandi and their daughter Leah; Larissa and Rachael; a brother Bob and his wife Sue of Ravenna and his sister Linda Shearer of Chesterville; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on the family on Monday August 10, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead. Pastors Rob Music and Bob Allen will conduct services there on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Following the committal service a meal will be provided at the Chesterville United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hospice of MedCentral Mansfield.
