MANSFIELD: Erna F. Jakobsons, 87, formerly of Lexington Avenue, Mansfield, died Thursday morning March 9, 2006 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.

She was born January 10, 1919 in Moscow, Russia, to Mikels and Pauline Zelmin Dzerve, was graduated from Riga, Latvia High School, and came to the United States in 1949.

Erna worked with Jacobson’s Department Store in East Lansing, Michigan, overseeing the alterations department and also worked as a seamstress in The Style Shop.

She moved to Mansfield nine years ago from Lansing, Michigan, where she was a member of the Latvian Lutheran Congregation, and the sewing circle of the church. She used her “needle and thread” talents to benefit The Store in Mansfield as well as orphanages in Latvia.

An avid reader, Erna tended her home garden, and took great care in home canning and entertaining.

Erna had traveled extensively, all over the U.S., and had even returned to her homeland Europe.

A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law George E. and Patricia Svede of Mansfield; grandchildren Mark Svede of Glenford, Greg Svede of Marysville, and Michelle Svede of New Albany; a great granddaughter Loren Svede of Grove City; nieces and nephews and friends both in the U.S. and Latvia.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Janis Svede in January of 1945, her second husband Roberts Jakobsons in June of 1994; a brother Aleksandrs Abolins and a sister Elza Smits.

The funeral service will be held Monday, March 13, 2006 at 11 am in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marilou Brook officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home the hour prior to the funeral. Inurnment will be in Latvian Memorial Park, Greene County, New York.
