Erich Richard Leo Kuhlman

June 28, 1968 ‒ August 17, 2017

Delaware, Ohio
Formerly of Ypsilanti, Michigan

Erich R. Kuhlman, age 49 of Delaware, Ohio and formerly of Michigan died unexpectedly Thursday, August 17, 2017.

He was born on June 28, 1968 to Richard Kuhlman of Ypsilanti, MI and the late Gretchen (Heurich). A native of Ypsilanti, MI, Erich graduated from the University of Michigan where he was a four year golf team member, lettering twice. A PGA Professional, Erich honed his golf career and experience at both private and public golf clubs in Arizona, Ohio, and throughout Michigan at Great Oaks Country Club, Otsego Club and Resort, Paint Creek Country Club, and Solitude Links Golf Course.  In April of this year he became the head golf professional at Tartan Fields Golf Club in Dublin. During his professional career he was an accomplished player in his own right having played in the PGA Buick Open (2003) and the PGA Professionals Championship (2008).

It was while he was serving as an assistant golf pro at the Knollwood County Club that he met his soon to be wife Kelly Scharf herself, a golf professional.  In 2008 they were married and together would spend the next 5 years associated with The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth, MI, where many lasting friendships remain.

A proud member of the University of Michigan Letterman Alumni Club, he was a huge Michigan fan.  He looked forward to every opportunity to talk Michigan football and treasured time spent attending games in the “Big House”, needless to say he bled maize and blue.

An athlete at heart, whether it was baseball, golf, basketball, or skiing, it came easy for Erich. He also enjoyed reading, playing the guitar, and traveling.

Described as reliable, caring, and passionate, he was gifted with intelligence and honest to a fault. At times a tease, most importantly he was loveable. Happy times spent with his family will never be forgotten.

In addition to his father he is survived by his wife of 9 years Kelly, children Leo and Lydia, sister Alicia Singer (Tom Roen) of Ft. Worth, TX, parents-in-law John and Janine Scharf, extended family, and friends.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26th, 2017 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 201 N. River St., Ypsilanti, MI 48198.

Memorial contributions can be made to Kelly Kuhlman, c/o Huntington Bank, attn: Harlie Akers, 1750 Columbus Pike, Delaware, Ohio 43015. For the benefit of his kids, Leo and Lydia.
