Emma Louise Hill, age 80, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Country Court Nursing Home. She was born on September 4, 1936 in Shenandoah, Ohio the daughter of Charles and Laura Ruth (Myer) Phillips.

After graduating from high school, Emma earned a degree from the Cosmetology School of Beauty in Newark and opened up her own salon in Mount Vernon named Emma’s Boutique. After a successful career working at the salon, Emma retired and went to work with her late husband Ambrose Hill at the Radio Shack that he had established years prior. Emma also worked as a nurse’s aid for the Mount Vernon Developmental Center.

Having a passion for gardening, Emma earned a certificate of completion as a Master Gardener from the Ohio State Extension Office. She enjoyed bowling, crafts and was an avid collector of angels, Santa’s, roosters and Hummel’s. Emma was a member of Knox Chapter #236 Order of Eastern Star. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

She is survived by her children; Janie (Brent) Vail of Fredericktown, Sheri Cochran of Mount Vernon, Cynthia (Randall) Harris of Fredericktown and Brian Hill of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary McLaughlin of Chicago, Illinois and Ruth Underwood of Greenwich, Ohio.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ambrose Hill Jr.; a son-in-law, Denny Cochran; four brothers, Rezinald Phillips, Robert Phillips, Charles Phillips and Cletus Phillips, a sister, Marleen Brooks.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 beginning at 12 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 where friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions in Emma’s name may be made to Hospice of Knox County.
