MOUNT GILEAD: Elmer “Pete” Mast peacefully passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2013 in Morrow Manor Nursing Center in Chesterville. He was 96. Pete Mast was a hardworking farmer. Described as fair and honest, consistent and dependable, Pete was a good provider to his family who knew the importance of service to his church and community.

Born Elmer Mast May 16, 1917 at home in Holmes County, he was the son of David and Amanda (Hostetler) Mast. He operated farms in both Holmes and Wayne Counties, before moving to Morrow County in 1950. He established his family farm that year and operated it for over 65 years. He was a member of Johnsville Run-About Farm Bureau Council, and enjoyed the support of that community for many years.

Pete served on the Board of Directors for the Federal Land Bank (now Farm Credit) in Mount Vernon for 16 years. He loved to travel, made two trips to Europe, visited Paraguay, and crossed North America from Nova Scotia to Alaska.

He was instrumental in establishing Gilead Mennonite Church, helped build the church building, and remained a lifelong member. During the 38 winters he and his wife spent in Florida he attended Bay Shore Mennonite Church in Sarasota.

He is survived by his children Louella & Don Chapman of Mt. Gilead, Edward & Janice Mast of Lexington, Mervin & Sharon Mast and Loren & Kimberly Mast all of Mt. Gilead; grandchildren Galen & Tammy Chapman, Glenda & Shawn Morgan, Gary & Mincie Chapman, Brian & Jennifer Mast, Jennifer & Greg Coffman, Tracey & James Grenkoski, Julie Williams, Amy Mast, Mary Mast, Justin & Keri Mast and Kelly Mast; 21 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild on the way; a brother Vernon Mast of Perrysburg; a sister-in-law Sis Mast of Massillon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years Edna (Swartenztruber) Mast on May 21, 2011. Also deceased are his brothers Henry Mast, Donald Mast and David Mast, Jr.

The Mast family will receive friends Friday, November 15, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Craven & Snyder Funeral Home, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead. A worship service, giving glory to God for the life of Elmer Mast will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Gilead Mennonite Church, 7090 CR 121, Mt. Gilead. Pastors Brian Mosher and Murray Krabill will officiate. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Chesterville.
