Ellen Zehner

May 21, 1948 ‒ October 21, 2015

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Ellen Marie Zehner passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Hospice House in Ashland surrounded by her family following a long battle with cancer. She was 67.

Ellen was born in Ashland, Ohio on May 21st 1948, daughter of Donavan and Blanche (Lifer) McIntire. She graduated from Ashland College and she moved to Mansfield in 1978 with James Zehner to whom she was married for 23 years.

Ellen retired from Loudonville-Perrysville schools (her alma mater) after 30 years of teaching. She earned her Master’s +15 from the College of Mount St. Joseph and enjoyed teaching 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades.

She was a faithful longtime member of Berean Baptist Church in Mansfield and loved to spend her free time playing sports, reading, and winning at cards. During the summer, you could find Ellen at her second home in Huron where she was always busy with a project and enjoying the lake. Her friends and family will remember her as a social butterfly with a competitive nature who loved the Lord with all her heart.

Ellen is survived by her daughter and son, Jennifer Zehner-Scheurer (Fred Grosch) of Mansfield and Zaun and Masako Zehner of Tokyo; her boyfriend Dennis Iden of Galion; brother Floyd and Doris McIntire of Lucas, four Zehner sisters-in-law Sharon, Connie, Lynn, and Kim; numerous nieces and nephews; and two grandsons Vaughn Scheurer and Taiyo Zehner.

Her family will receive friends 1-4 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2015 in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday with Pastor Dave Pound officiating.

For contributions in her memory, make checks payable to Jimi Vincent Toys for Kids (which provides Christmas presents for children), or Hospice of North Central Ohio and bring or send to the funeral home: P.O. Box 3085, Mansfield, Ohio 44904.

  • As my friend and classmate since childhood, Ellen was such a joy to be around! She was blessed with children who took such good care of their Mom through her battle with cancer. Miss that sweet smile and ornery glint in your eye, Ellen!

  • I am so saddened by Ellen’s passing. I have often referred to her as a pivotal teacher for my youngest son. He was a voracious reader in 3rd grade. He wanted to read novels. She sent him home with his first novel, one from her personal library. Her excitement discussing the books with him was so genuine and sweet. Her encouragement and excitement of reading made him appreciate it even more. He’s 35 now, and still has a book at his side ALWAYS.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Lovely woman, great teacher, loving mother and sister. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

  • Jennifer, Zaun and family -sorry for your loss. Your mother was wonderful person and I know she will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

  • We, too, had the privilege of meeting Dennis & Ellen while at Southern Pines in Florida. She was so high-spirited and always wanted to win at whatever game we were playing, I know her name will be mentioned when we go back this year as we play the card games she taught us and the exact rules. She was such a pleasure to have around and will be missed.

  • I’ve only had the opportunity to know Ellen for such a short time. Her courage, strength and wisdom will forever be burnt in my soul. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jennifer, Fred, Vaughn, Zaun, Masako, Taiyo, and all other family and friends. May God Bless you all.

  • What a blessing it was for us to get to know your mom last year in Florida. She loved Jesus, she loved card games and learned we have “Florida rules”, and she loved to win! We will certainly miss her orneriness and her contagious smile down here, but we will see her on those golden streets in Heaven….. John 11:25-26

  • I will miss Ellen greatly. I remember all the wonderful times we had biking, cross country skiing, exploring different places and especially the trip to New York where we were treated like royalty at the hotel because we were with “Zaun’s Mom.” She brought out the best in everyone and I was blessed to have known her. My prayers are with you.

  • My deepest sympathies on your loss. May the words expressed at Revelation 21:4 give you some solace during this difficult time. Soon the pain and sorrow we experience with the death of a loved one will be no more.
