Edwin “Ted” Mitchell

September 22, 1912 ‒ June 05, 2007

Marion, Ohio

Edwin “Ted” Mitchell, age 94, of Marion, died peacefully on Tuesday evening, June 5, 2007, at the Marion General Hospital.

Ted was born in Ironton, Ohio, on September 22, 1912, the son of the late Ralph and Marian Campbell Mitchell. As a family they moved to Columbus, where Ted would graduate from North High School in the Class of 1930.

As a child, Ted grew up knowing he was to be a lawyer and he followed his dreams receiving his Law degree from the Ohio State University in the Class of 1937 and was admitted to the Ohio Bar the same year. While at OSU, Ted worked as an assistant law librarian.

With a firm belief and devotion to the legal system, Ted practiced law at numerous locations for 57 years, and most notably at the law firm of Streletz, Halberstein & Mitchell in Marion from 1948 until his retirement in 1994.

With a deep love of the city of Marion, Ted gave much of himself to his community. He was past president of the Kiwanis Club, the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, and served for twenty years as Trustee of the Mary Elizabeth Foundation and as an officer of the MedCenter Foundation.

Ted was elected to the Marion City School Board in 1952 and 1956, and served on the steering committee to urge the Ohio State University to establish a branch in Marion. Past president and chairman of the Marion Area College Foundation, he was an integral piece in helping purchase the current 40 acre site where the college sits today. For many years, Ted served on the first Citizen’s Committee at OSU, Marion Branch. In 1994, Ted was appointed as Trustees Emeritus of the Ohio State Marion Branch and a member of the University Presidents and Buckeye Clubs.

A staunch Ohio State University supporter and alum, Ted avidly followed his beloved OSU Buckeye football team, and served on the Woody Hayes Frontliner Club. Always supporting the Ohio State University, he was a member of the Ohio State Alumni Association; and received the OSU Alumni Centennial Award in 1970, and the OSU Distinguished Service Award in 1978. Ted was the past chairman of the Ohio State Alumni Advisory Board.

An avid supporter of local and state bar associations, Ted served as past president of the Marion County Bar Association and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio State Bar Association in 1966. He was a member of the Workman’s Compensation and Unemployment Compensation Committees of the Ohio State Bar Association. Along with Joseph Galloway, Ted was made a life member of the Council, 1974 and twice served as chairman of the Council.

Soon after moving to Marion, Ted joined and was deeply devoted to the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, Elder, Trustee, and Sunday school teacher.

Having had five children and losing his first wife, Marjorie Mitchell at the young age of 32, Ted found his “savior” and companion, Elaine Smith Mitchell. They were married on December 21, 1957, at the First Presbyterian Church, and shared almost fifty wonderful years together.

A family man, Ted would do everything in his power to keep his strong family united. Though he was very demanding of himself and his children, he instilled in his children that anything less than your best was not good enough for the people you love and the community in which you live.

Very bright and well read, Ted thrived in conversations with insight and well thought out opinions. He was a decisive man, who loved to surprise his friends, family and colleagues with his keen, yet very sarcastic sense of humor. To keep his mind sharp even in his later years, he would challenge himself to more than three crossword puzzles a day.

His other favorite pastimes include fishing at Lake Erie and playing golf at the Marion Country Club. Also, he collected and enjoyed classical music and grand opera.

To his grandchildren, Ted was a crafty magician, always keeping them on their toes and being an exemplary role model for them to look up to.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife; two daughters: Judy (Denny) La Musga of Beavercreek, and Karen Mitchell of Dallas, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Jan Mitchell Franek of Cincinnati; a son: Alan (Lynn) Mitchell of Portland, Oregon; four grandchildren: Cindrica, Robert, Katrina & Michael Mitchell; and three great-grandchildren: Campbell, Rylie, and Makenna Mitchell.

In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his first wife: Marjorie Mitchell in 1954; brother: Ralph “Chic” Mitchell; sister: Elizabeth Arrowsmith; son: Bob Mitchell; and a daughter: Linda Mitchell.

The family will greet friends from 1 – 2 p.m. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 143 South Prospect St., Marion, where a memorial service will follow immediately after at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. J. David Worthen officiating. The family will again greet friends following the memorial service. Private graveside services will be held at Marion Cemetery.
