Dwight G. Brainard Jr. , age 86 of Delaware, Ohio went home to be with his LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at Willow Brook at Delaware Run.

Born in Buffalo, New York he was the son of the late Dwight Sr. and June (Bowen) Brainard. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Buffalo; he worked for 38 years as a civil engineer with the New York Department of Transportation finishing his career as the Utilities Engineer responsible for highway construction related utility relocation’s for the entire state.

Following a blind date meeting and courtship during college he married Patricia Harrington in 1951. Together they made a home, raised their family, traveled, and enjoyed the challenges life brought their way. They lived in the Buffalo, NY area until 1969, moving to Westerlo, NY for job promotions and to continue raising the family. They moved to Delaware, OH in 2010 when they fully retired. They were active members of the First Baptist Church of Hamburg (Buffalo, NY area), First Baptist Church of Westerlo (Albany, NY area), and the Delaware Bible Church (Delaware, OH).

With an adventuresome spirit he shared with his family his passion for the outdoor activities of sailing, canoeing, camping, hiking / mountain climbing, skiing, and traveling. Considered a ski bum at heart, he was a member of the National Ski Patrol, Professional Ski Instructors of America, and taught at the Adaptive Sports Foundation at Windham Mountain Ski Resort for over 20 years. A photo documenter of the family events and talented woodworker, he was also a life member of the NRA.

Fun loving, hardworking, always polite and compassionate he lived life to its fullest. Time spent outdoors with his family was treasured. He will long be remembered for his love and devotion to God, his family and living a zest filled life.

Dwight is survived by those whom he loved the most, his beloved wife of 65 years Patricia, children Dwight G. (Becky) Brainard III of Malvern, PA, Robert H. (Carlotta) Brainard of Danbury, CT, Jeanne (Moris) Niknam of Ashley, OH, 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his sister Jeanne Haak.

Friends may call one hour prior to the Saturday, July 23, 2016, memorial services to be held at 2 PM in the Summit Room of Willow Brook at Delaware Run, 100 Delaware Crossing, Delaware, OH where Pastor Scott Tiede of Delaware Bible Church will officiate. Burial services will be held in September at the Westerlo Rural Cemetery in Westerlo, NY following a memorial service at First Baptist Church of Westerlo on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 1:00 PM.
