Duane “Red” Gilbert

July 27, 1943 ‒ February 07, 2017

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Duane “Red” Gilbert passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017 in Kindred Hospital following an extended illness and was surrounded by family. He was 73.

Duane was born July 27, 1943 in Ashland to Charles & Arbie (Hootman) Gilbert. Right after he graduated from Northwestern High School he joined the National Guard and later the Air National Guard where he served for many years.

Red worked for General Motors for over 40 years in truck repair until he retired. On September 16, 1978 he married Sandy Collins and together they shared 38 wonderful years.

Duane regularly attended Little Washington Congregational Church in Mansfield and previously served as a deacon. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Masonic Venus Lodge #152 F&AM in Mansfield.

In his spare time, Red enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, playing pool, and rooting for the Cleveland Indians. He was a dog lover and especially loved his dog Snickers and his granddog Molly. Duane and his wife built a house on Candlewood Lake where they lived for 17 years and he kept a pontoon and a fishing boat to enjoy with family and friends. Above all, he was a wonderful husband and father who worked very hard to provide for his family.

He is survived by his loving wife Sandy Gilbert of Mansfield; children Tina Harwood and Teresa Gilbert of Venice, FL and Ashley Gilbert of Mansfield; grandchildren Nick Fought, Dakota Harwood, Swade Harwood, and Rayleigh Burchard; siblings Clayton (Marge) Gilbert of Millersburg, Lola (Harold) Yeater of Nashville, and Darlene (David) Kennedy of Wooster; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents Charles & Arbie Gilbert, Red was preceded in death by three brothers Darrel, Stanley, and Ronald Gilbert; and two nephews Robert and Kenneth Gilbert.

Friends may call 10-11 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2017 in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service celebrating his life will begin at 11 a.m. The Rev. David Root will officiate, Masonic services will be performed by Venus Lodge #152 F&AM, and burial will follow in the Masonic section of Mansfield Memorial Park.
