Dr. Ross Hawthorne Hill

Dr. Ross Hawthorne Hill passed away Tuesday evening, September 29, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 94.

Ross was born in Arcadia, Nebraska to parents Ray and Alva (John) Hill on June 4, 1921.He graduated from Arcadia High School and attended Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney Nebraska.

When World War II began he enlisted in the Navy. He was assigned to Naval Ordinance working on the Norden Bomb sight, which included enemy submarine patrol on both the east and west coasts. After the war, he applied to Creighton School of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska in 1946, and graduated in 1950 with a DDS. During his senior year, he joined the Army Senior Dental Program. Upon graduating he entered the United State Army and the Army Dental Corps. Ross served a total of 30 years. He Served in Korea in 1951 with the 987th Armored Field Artillery Battalion from Canton, Ohio as a Dental Officer to the Battalion.

Stateside, he had many assignments, including the United States Military Academy, 2nd General Hospitals in Landstuhl, Germany, and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. His prosthodontia residency was at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. He was awarded the A-Prefex to his M.O.S. for outstanding professionalism.

In spare time Ross enjoyed watching sports, and was an avid Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. He also took pleasure in watching the stock market, and spending time with family and friends.

Ross is survived by his wife of 66 years Betty Shaffer; his children Dr. Stephen (Cyndi) Hill of Mansfield, and Saralyn (Gary) Shone of Texas; grandchildren Meghan Hill of New York City, N.Y., Donovan Hill of Canton, Ohio, Caelin Hill and Evan Hill of Mansfield, and Ross Shone of Texas; a brother John E. Hill of Boulder, CO, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 infant brothers, brother Orvis Hill, sister-in-law’s Shirley Hill, and Margaret Hill.

Ross’s family will receive friends on Sunday, October 4, 2015 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a service to follow at 2 p.m. at the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Faith Proietti will officiate.
