Dr. John R. Petrie, 90, of Marion, died February 11, 2009, at the Morrow County Hospital, Mount Gilead, OH, following a brief illness.
John was born on November 25, 1918 in Huntington, Indiana, the son of the late Nicholas and Helena (Schenkel) Petrie. He graduated from Huntington High School and attended Indiana University, The University of Michigan and Butler University. He participated in the basketball programs of both Michigan and Butler and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. John met his future wife, Margot Maxwell Brown, at Butler. They were married on August 6, 1942, at Concordia College in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John enlisted in the US Navy at the beginning of World War II. He spent 5 years as a naval aviator sent on reconnaissance missions in search of enemy submarines. John had the honor of being the first Ensign to receive his own crew to pilot the PBM Mariner. He also flew the PBY-5 Catalina with the Atlantic Fleet which was involved in antisubmarine warfare and had bases in San Juan, Brazil and Great Britain. John was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant.
Dr. Petrie studied at the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago where he received his doctor of optometry degree. John and Margot moved to Mount Gilead in 1948, where he opened his first practice. John’s career led him to Lima, Ohio, and Bellbrook, Ohio, before settling permanently in Lima in 1971.
In their younger years, John and Margot enjoyed working together in their beautiful yards and attending football games at the University of Michigan. John’s interests also included traveling, golf and music. An avid sportsman, he worked with coaches from the University of Michigan recruiting talented area players. John will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather with an incredible memory and endearing, engaging personality. Gregarious by nature, he cultivated many friendships through each stage of his life, leaving a lasting impression on all those he encountered.
John was a lifetime member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Alumni Association of Illinois College of Optometry, a member of the VFW Post 2689 in Huntington, Indiana, the American Legion Post #0139 in Sullivan, IN, the F. and A.M. Grand Lodge #206 in Mount Gilead and a lifetime member of the Elks Club. He formerly served as a District Committee Member on the Harding Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and attended Trinity United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Jeff Petrie of Grapevine, Texas, Mary Frances Ramsey of Gray, TN , and Jane (Thomas) Griffith of Mount Gilead; seven grandchildren: Ashleigh and Nicholas Petrie, Margot (Michael) Repas, Gretchen (Peter) Bauman, Molly Allen, Matthew (Kathleen) Griffith, Sarah Griffith; two great-grandchildren: Emily Renee Briley-Bauman and Abigail Margot Griffith; sister-in-law Gretchen Halbin Brown, son-in-law Floyd Ramsey and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Margot, in 2002; his son, John in 1996; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Wilbur “Pete” and Ruth, Robert George “Bob” and Alice, brother-in-law James Maxwell Brown; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Mary Jane and Hubert Shelton.
John’s nephew, Reverend Jack Brown, will officiate at the funeral in Mount Gilead, Ohio. Friends and family are invited to attend the graveside service at Rivercliff Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009.
