Douglas C. Steele

July 06, 1952 ‒ June 07, 2021

Cincinnati, Ohio
Formerly of Galion, Ohio

Douglas C. Steele, 68, of Cincinnati passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021 at Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati.

Born July 6, 1952 in Leaksville, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Hardy and Vesta (Joyce) Steele of Kenton. He married the love of his life, Pamela Atkinson, on December 31, 1976.

Doug was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who left everything on the field.  He loved his family deeply and served them all tenaciously with everything he had. Doug never met a stranger and made everyone around him feel special, lending a hand to anyone who ever needed help. To the end, he was an avid Ohio State and Cleveland Browns fan.

Doug was also the hardest-working man his family knew. He graduated from Kenton High School in 1970 and for much of his life, he worked in manufacturing. In the late 1980s, he attended classes at Marion Technical College every night after a full day at the Glenwood Range Factory in Delaware and later Komatsu Dresser in Galion. In 1990, with his Associates Degree in industrial engineering proudly in hand, he moved from the shop floor to the office at Dresser, where he served as a draftsman until its closing. Later in life, Doug found another perfect calling, this time using his people skills and knowledge of all things automotive as a manager at AutoZone in Bucyrus.

In late 2017, Doug suffered a stroke and lost his beloved wife Pam less than two months later.  Despite his circumstances, he maintained an optimistic attitude and worked hard to gain enough independence for assisted living at Brookwood Retirement Community in Cincinnati. Throughout his journey, Doug was a blessing to everyone he met, bringing light to every hospital room, rehab center, and nursing home that cared for him. He was the life of the party (not to mention the constant winner of the Trivia Challenge) at Brookwood, where Doug developed special friendships for which his family will be eternally grateful.

In addition to his wife and parents, Doug was also preceded in death by his brothers Gary and Keith Steele. He is survived by daughter Teresa (Nate) Swartz of Richwood and sons Kevin Steele of Marion, Matthew (Carolyn) Steele of Mason, and Cody (Monica) Steele of St. Bernard; grandchildren Case and Camden Swartz and Mya, Ella, Ainsley, Benjamin, Griffin, Cooper, Meyer, and Ryder Steele; sisters Faye (Jeff) Terrill of Rushsylvania and Linda (Ray) Lambert of Hilliard; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833, where services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Joseph Rhea officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made either to the Galion Community Foundation ( or the American Diabetes Association (
