Dorothy Denman Dunn

May 14, 1912 ‒ November 30, 2009

Fredericktown, Ohio

Dorothy Denman Dunn, age 97, of Marion and formerly of County Road 179 in Fredericktown, died early Monday morning, November 30, 2009, at the Marion General Hospital following a brief illness.

On May 14, 1912, Dorothy was born at home on the family farm in Chester Township of Morrow County, the daughter of the late William and Aleta (Weaver) Denman. She graduated from Chesterville High School in the Class of 1930, where she excelled in basketball.

Shortly after graduation, Dorothy was encouraged by mutual friends to date her high school friend, Robert “Jeff” Dunn. Soon thereafter they were married at the Struble home on June 14, 1933. Together they cared for the Denman family farm, which was one of the first farms established in Morrow County in 1786. They shared over seventy one wonderful years of marriage, until he preceded her in death on March 15, 2005.

An extremely dedicated homemaker and “particular housekeeper,” Dorothy lovingly cared for her husband and their two children, Bill and Anne, and their home. Her family was always her first priority, and she was actively involved in any events she could for her family. Her care did not stop at her children either, as she enjoyed spoiling all of her grandchildren, all of whom knew there would be cookies waiting for them if they ever visited “Grandma.”

Always looking forward to the holidays, Dorothy loved being surrounded by her family when they would all come home to the farm.

A “wonderful seamstress,” all of Dorothy’s friends and family would call on her for anything they needed sewn. She made countless outfits and wedding dresses, and could even reupholster furniture. Her attention to detail was evident in every piece she made.

Sharing a strong bond with her community, Dorothy cared dearly for her neighbors and friends. She would do anything she could for them in their times of need, whether it meant sending meals to their homes or just sending a thoughtful card. Also, she was an active member of the Chesterville United Methodist Church and had formerly served as a Sunday School Teacher at the Chesterville Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, the Wayne Grange and the Washington Club.

Dorothy will be dearly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, William “Bill” and Connie Dunn of Marion, and their children: Lisa (Jeff) Turner of Powell, Lori (Peter) Backlund of Silver Springs, Maryland, and Linn (Ted) Wade of Delaware; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Bruce Gehrisch of Marion, and their children: Michael (Debbie) Gehrisch of Bethesda, Maryland, and Jodi (Ronald) Miller of Macomb, Michigan; eight great-grandchildren: Rachel and Nathan Turner, Sam Backlund, Emma and Robert Wade, Mitchell Gehrisch, and Trevor and Brittni Miller; a brother-in-law, Chester Scarbrough of Mount Vernon; and sister-in-law, Betty Rose of Englewood, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Including her husband and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother, Walter Denman; and two sisters, Edna Sayler, and Margaret Scarbrough.

The Dunn family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead, where services celebrating her life will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Jeannie Winters and Joe Sopher officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesterville United Methodist Church, 115 E. Sandusky St., Chesterville, OH 43317.
