Doris Irene Smith, age 81, of Mount Gilead died Monday June 29, 2009 at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility.

She was born in Johnsville on March 19, 1928 the daughter of the late Cromer and Mabel (Zeger) Rinehart.

Doris was a 1946 graduate of Johnsville High School.

On May 14, 1949 she married Richard S. Smith at the Johnsville parsonage in a service officiating by Rev. Cecil Nichols. They have spent 60 wonderful years together.

Prior to their marriage Doris worked at the Inn Restaurant in Mount Gilead for several years. She also worked many years at the Johnsville School as a cook in the cafeteria.

She was a lifetime member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and on the funeral dinner committee.

Doris was very active in the community holding membership on the Farm Bureau Council for 40 years, was actively involved in the ladies farm bureau, and was on the elections board and served as a poll worker and central committeeman for Congress Township East.

A woman of great culinary skill, Doris could perform magic in the kitchen when baking one of her award winning cherry pies. For many years she could be found winning 1st Champion at the Morrow County Fair for her pie!

Social by nature, she was always up for a good game of euchre or dominoes. Always playing with the family and friends she loved so dearly.

You may recall Doris sitting on her porch, watching the birds; her favorites where humming birds and she had collectibles throughout her home.

She also enjoyed the solitude of working outdoors, tending to her flower beds and garden.

Doris even found time to go on various bus trips with her friends.

She was most proud of her role as wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Richard S. Smith; their four children Roger (Deb) Smith of Mount Gilead, Pam Geckley of Cardington, Carlyle (Sara) Smith of Mount Gilead, Michelle (Matt) Slusher of Mount Gilead; 5 grandchildren Matt, Amber, Allison, Emily (Mike) Smith, and Katie Slusher.
