Doris E. Styer
July 05, 1926 ‒ April 29, 2009
Mount Gilead, Ohio
Doris E. Styer, age 82, of Mount Gilead, died early Wednesday morning, April 29, 2009, at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility Sunshine Room.
On July 5, 1926, Doris was born in Mount Gilead, the daughter of the late Walter M. and Hazel (Pinyerd) George.
On November 23, 1967, Doris married John F. Styer. They shared over 40 years together before he preceded her in death on May 16, 2008.
A determined and hardworking woman, Doris spent many years as an assembler for North Electric in Galion.
With a love for cooking, Doris could always be found making a dish in the kitchen. Her specialty was the dressing she would make every year for the family Thanksgiving and she could always be counted on to provide a cherry cheesecake for the annual Styer family reunion.
Having numerous gardens, Doris appreciated time outdoors to tend to her flowers and vegetables. She would can her vegetables and have them readily available for meals. She enjoyed making different wines from the grapes she grew and also made dandelion wine.
A special place existed in Doris’s heart for her family. She would babysit her grandchildren and nieces and nephews whenever she had an offer.
Over the last few years, as her body began to fail her, Doris developed a passion for reading. She loved reading books and magazines, but her favorite reading material was The Morrow County Sentinel.
Doris will be dearly missed by her sons; Gene (Barb) Fissell of Ocala, Florida, Ken (Shirley) Fissell of Deland, Florida; her step-daughters: Judy George of Cardington, Susan Styer of Providence, Rhode Island; nine grandchildren: Grace, Tim, Annie, Donna, Shawn, Tonya, Ginger, Steve, and David; 10 great grandchildren; brothers-in-law: Roy Styer of Mount Gilead, Jack Styer of Marengo, Robert (Bonnie) Styer of Reynoldsburg; sisters-in-law: Anna Hankins of Johnson City, Tennessee, Patty (John) Graves of Reynoldsburg, Dorothy (Dean) Emmons of Cardington, Helen (Dale) Bowersmith, Jane (Ralph) Bartlett, Pauline Styer and Ethel Styer, all of Mount Gilead; special nieces: Darla Styer of Columbus, Cathy (Earl) Kimbleton of Marengo; very close great niece and nephew: Heather and Michael Hoffman; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Lowell George and sister, Phyllis Styer.
The Styer family will greet friends from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, where services celebrating her life will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Doug Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.
