MANSFIELD: Doris “Dorie” Sertell, passed away surrounded by her family, Tuesday, Feb 26th, 2013 at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, OH after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dorie was 73 and a lifelong resident of Mansfield. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She was a past President of the Mansfield Garden Club.

She was born on May 20th, 1939 in Mansfield, to Paul and Mary (Kljus) Benich, who immigrated to the United States from the former Yugoslavia.

She graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1957 and then attended Ohio University. She started out her career at the Tappan Company, and then from there enjoyed over 25 years working at Empire Affiliates Credit Union (now Directions Credit Union). She treasured her years at the credit union and the many friends she made throughout the years with whom she worked with.

From a young age Dorie had a passion for life and her family. Growing up in a Croatian family rich in culture and European cuisine she become a wonderful cook and carried on the many family recipes which were enjoyed by all. She loved to welcome friends and family into her home and entertain. She loved music and dancing and was often found on the dance floor dancing to her favorite polka.

Her children and her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a proud mother and together with her husband was the first one following them to every event in their lives.

Dorie is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Tom Sertell; one son and two daughters, Mike Sertell of Mansfield, Mary and Donnie Strine of Shelby, Barb and Ray Ernat of Chicago, IL; two grandchildren Zachary and Katelyn Strine; three sisters and one brother; Paulina Patocki of Columbus, Ohio, Kaya Black (Gordon) of Mansfield, Paul Benich (Jeannie) of Phoenix, AZ and Nada Norman of Columbus, Ohio; Brother in Law Jim (Karen) Sertell of Murrells Inlet, SC; 14 nieces and nephews and many devoted friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Mary Benich and a niece Rita Patocki-Schwenn.

Friends may call Friday March 1st, 2013 from 3p-8p in the Marion Ave Snyder Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be offered Saturday at 11a at St. Peter’s Catholic Church celebrated by the Rev. Father Gregory Hite. Burial will follow in the Mansfield Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the St. Peter’s Monsignor Dunn Foundation or the North West Ohio chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association may be made through the funeral home.
