Donna M. Hale

July 13, 1936 ‒ January 10, 2014

Galena, Ohio

Donna M. Hale, age 77 of Galena passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 10, 2014 in Riverside Hospital following complications with heart surgery.

She was born on July 13, 1936 in Marion to the late Donald and Lavinia (Sherman) Griffith. As their only child, she was the apple of her father’s eye, helping not only in the kitchen, but also in the fields and with the family farm. A cheerleader at Galena and a graduate of Big Walnut High School in 1954, she then earned a degree in education from Otterbein University.

It was in first grade and the pull of her pig tail with ribbon that began a lifelong courtship and endearing relationship. The second grader was Glenn Hale, her beloved husband of 56 years, but lifelong partner and companion. They truly defined the meaning of childhood sweethearts.

Following their marriage in 1957 she worked as a school teacher and substitute for the Big Walnut School System. When her boys came along, she stayed home to care for their every need and help her husband with the needs of the farm. She later worked for 10 years with the Sunbury Community Library, retiring in 2001.

A woman of deep faith she was an active member of the Galena United Methodist Church, serving as trustee and helping with vacation bible school as well as all activities of the church. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau, and a former member of the Buckeye Sports Car Club, Sports Car Club of America, and several women’s clubs. She enjoyed mowing the lawn, working outside, and long drives with her husband in their 1961 TR.

With a passion for travel, she had visited all 50 states; Amish country and Arizona were favorites. But nothing compared to her love of home, unmatched only by her love of family.

Her life was centered on her beloved and treasured family and their every need. One to never complain and always with a smile, she took care of everyone else’s needs. She was proof that one did not have to have money to be rich, she was wealthy beyond compare.

She is survived by beloved husband Glenn, sons Hardy, Dan (Melissa) all of Galena, Howard (Erin)of Canal Winchester, treasured grandchildren Hannah, Noah, Meghann, Corinne, and expected Liam, brother and Sisters-in-law: Forrest (Marilyn) Hale of Galena, Doris Hale, and Dorothy Souders, nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as countless friends.

Friends may call 1-3 on Wednesday at the Galena United Methodist Church, 2777 Sunbury Rd., Galena, Ohio 43021, where services will follow 3:00 p.m. Wednesday and Rev. Jeff Croft will officiate. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery.
