Donald M. “Barney” Barnhart

October 12, 1947 ‒ April 25, 2021

Ashley, Ohio

Donald M. “Barney” Barnhart, age 73, of Ashley, died peacefully on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Grady Memorial Hospital with his loving children by his side.

Born October 12, 1947 in Shelby, OH to the late Henry M. and Betty E. (Cheeseman) Barnhart.  A skilled Tool and Die Maker by trade.  He proudly served his country as a firefighter in the U.S. Air Force, Viet Nam Era, stationed in Alaska.

Barney loved vacationing with his family at Dale Hollow, camping and boating.  He loved shooting sports, hunting and fishing.  His love for hunting out-weighted his luck and/or skill.  He loved to fish and probably would’ve caught more if he had the patience to leave his lure in the water.  He was a competitive shooter, his crowning achievement was shooting a perfect score on a single stage….once.  He always had ants in his pants and could never sit still.  He collected rare Alaskan oddities such as a Hoofaboo, Oosik and an Indian in a Barrel.  He loved his time in Alaska and always wanted to return, but could never quite talk his wife into it.

In addition to his parents, Barney was preceded in death by his wife, Gay Lynette (Geckley) Barnhart and sister, Carol Jean Barnhart.

Barney is survived by loving and devoted children, Shannon (Brian) Fisher of Fredericktown and Shane (Mara) Barnhart of Radnor, Ohio; “the lights of his life”, grandchildren, Ava and Easton Barnhart; sister, Linda Jones.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Barney’s favorite charity: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0552 in Barney’s memory.

  • Shannon and Shane,

I am so very sorry to read about the passing of your father! Don was such a good guy! He would stop by every now and then to say hi and spread some orneriness! While I am saddened that Don has left this earthly place, I am sure he is so happy to be with your mom! Hugs and prayers!

  • To the family of Don Barnhart,

In the short time I met your dad at Church and Sunday School, he seemed to enjoy being there. So sorry his illness was so fast in taking him down. He will be missed. Keep all is memories.

    Sincerely,
    Donna Mitchell

  • Don was a great brother in law and a better father, He loved his family more than anything. He was so proud of Shannon and Shane and clearly adored his grandchildren. Don will be missed by all. Sending our thoughts and prayers.

  • Shannon and Shane, we are so sorry for your loss. Picturing good ol’ Uncle Don, acting like he couldn’t hear a conversation and then adding in some smart aleck comment to make everyone laugh, makes me smile to think about. I’m sure he is thrilled to be with your mom and know they are both watching over you with love.

  • Shannon and Shane, so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. Jack and I always had so much fun with your family camping and boating. I know he missed your Mother so much.

  • So sorry to hear of the passing of Don. He was a friendly guy . He and Gay were a fun couple to be around. They are together now.
    With our Deepest Sympathy
