Donald Lattimore Mitchell, 85, of Delaware passed away Friday morning, January 11, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on August 8, 1933 in Delaware to the late Thomas L. and Mildred (Heathcock) Mitchell and later graduated from Willis High School in 1952. On June 16, 1953, he married the love of his life Thelma Loretta Young. Shortly thereafter, he built his first house and numerous other homes in the Delaware Community. His first official job was at the former L&K Restaurant in downtown Delaware.

In 1961, Donald graduated from Barber School and worked as a barber and ultimately assumed the Barber Shop owned by Alden Fox. While waiting for customers, He would create construction plans for rental properties.

In 1974, Donald bought a car wash on London Road that he operated as Mitchell’s Car Wash for 34 years. While operating the car wash, he bought, built and managed rental properties. He also worked for 13 years at Valves and Presses until 1987.

A lifetime Delaware resident, he loved reading, cars and motorcycles and he enjoyed going to the Brickyard to watch races. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially tending to his gardens and flowers. With a strong work ethic and a big heart, Donald would do anything for anybody.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and supportive wife of 65 years, Thelma Loretta; children, Debra (Jonathan) Chapman of Centerville, Massachusetts, Dennis (Natalia) Mitchell of Columbus, Gail Mitchell of Columbus, Judith L. Mitchell of Delaware, and Andrew (Tanya) Mitchell of Delaware; grandchildren, Donald (Monique) Chapman, Derek Chapman, Siobhan Chapman, Kayla Cousar, Anna Mitchell, and Kamryn Morgan; great grandsons, Ander Lattimore Chapman and Atwood Thomas Chapman; sisters, Doris (Bill) Fowler of Dayton and Judith R. Mitchell and Shirley Walker, both of Delaware; sisters-in-law, Snobia Mitchell and Eudora Mitchell, both of Delaware; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas, Virgil and Robert Mitchell, his sister Linda Crockrell and his brother-in-law Charles “Sandy” Crockrell.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Drive (formerly 1510 W. William Street), Delaware, where funeral services celebrating Donald’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 11:00 am with Pastor Michael Curtis of the Second Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. The family will then host a reception in the Snyder-Rodman Community Room.

  • Mr. Mitchell was such a wonderful and caring man with a gentle soul. I went to Mitchell’s Car Wash for years. He made sure your car was perfect before you drove out!!! Mr. Mitchell always had a kind heart for the people who needed help or kids who needed a place to do their service hours. So sorry for his passing.
