Through his efforts, he was awarded for competing in pole vaulting. Having an interest in farming, Donald moved in with his grandfather, so he could enroll at Mt. During many of those years, he was also working at Stone Container in Mansfield, OH as a die cutter operator. Don retired in 1991, from Stone Container, after 38 years.

Donald was a member of the VFW Post #16 and the Sons of Herman. During his years of retirement, Donald frequented his “clubs” each day, to have a good meal, and to visit with friends. He loved his country music, and could “two step” the evening away on the dance floor. Don was; active, independent, and sharp minded, into his 80’s, insisting on- living in his own home, driving his own car, and completed daily crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his sister, Glorine Smith of Johnsville; his nieces- Vickie (James) Bridges, and Jennifer (Robert) Cobern; and a nephew- Carmel (Annette) Smith Jr.; great-nephew- Justin (Ashley) Smith, great-nieces- Ashley (David) Bowersmith, Halla (Tommy Ostrum) Smith, and Alyssa Fry.
