Donald A. Heiby

January 12, 1922 ‒ October 05, 2008

Marion, Ohio

Donald A. Heiby, age 86, of Marion, died on Sunday evening, October 5, 2008, at the Grant Medical Center in Columbus following complications from a recent fall.

He was born in Marion County, Ohio, on January 12, 1922, the son of the late Oscar and Alma (Augenstine) Heiby. Donald graduated from Waldo High School.

Shortly following graduation, Donald was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving as a tech sergeant during World War II.

Donald began his working career at Tecumseh Products, where he would finish his career as supervisor of inspections after 42 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Marion Industrial Club.

On June 7, 1942, Donald married his loving wife, Ruth E. (Leffler) Heiby, in Marion. Together they have shared sixty six wonderful years of marriage and a strong family bond. Always putting their family first, Donald and Ruth faithfully took care of the needs of all of their family. When anyone would become ill, they would be the first to arrive, taking care of their home and making all of their meals. Also, no matter the distance, if their children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren were in an event they would do everything in their power to make it.

A man of faith, Donald was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council.

Members of the Marion Senior Center, Donald and Ruth enjoyed going every Thursday to play cards, eat lunch and visit with friends.

With a love for traveling, Donald and Ruth enjoyed numerous family trips and cruises, especially in retirement.

Sports fanatics, Donald and Ruth attended nearly all Pleasant High School football games until recently.

Being blessed with a wife who was an excellent cook, Donald loved when Ruth would make any meal, though he especially enjoyed her fried chicken and pies.

Good with his hands, Donald enjoyed making wooden crafts to sell at the local fairs.

Donald will be missed by his wife, Ruth Heiby of Marion; son, Thomas (Rita) Heiby of Columbus; three grandchildren: Kelly (Derrick) Heiby of Columbus, Joseph (Valerie) Heiby of Grove City, and Brian (Kristin) Barringer of Dublin; five great-grandchildren: Staley, Trenton, Perry, Brianna, and Sylvia with one on the way; and a sister, Mary Loyer of Marion.

In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his son, Robert E. Heiby; step-mother, Anna Heiby; brother, Lowell Heiby; and three sisters: Virginia Baxter, Margaret Russell, and Dorothy Heiby.

The Heiby family will greet friends on Thursday, October 9, 2008, from 3 – 6 p.m. at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion.
