Dessel D. Wheeler, age 88, of Fredericktown, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Knox Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 4, 1929 in Centerburg, Ohio the son of Clarence and Goldie (Duston) Wheeler. Dessel served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

After serving his country, Dessel moved back to Centerburg and worked for PPG. He also worked as a rural route carrier for the Mount Vernon News until his retirement at age 81. Dessel was an outdoorsman that loved to hunt and fish and he was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians.

He is survived by his children; Deborah Cockrell of Bladensburg, Joan Beckner of Naples, Florida and Dwight (Billie) Wheeler of Columbus; three grandchildren, Daniel (Stephanie) Cockrell, Nick (Jessica) Cockrell and Heather (John) Auker; ten great grandchildren, Kaylynn Cockrell, Kirsten Cockrell, Anthony Cockrell, Hannah Cockrell, Jase Cockrell, Cody Cockrell, Brody Cockrell, Bentley Cockrell, John Auker and Renee Auker; his sister, Dorla Hyatt of Mount Vernon; mother of his children, Lillian Wheeler Underhill and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Wheeler and two brothers, Donald Wheeler and Clarence Wheeler.

A graveside service with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018 beginning at 1 p.m. in Eastview Cemetery. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Dessel D. Wheeler.

    Sorry to hear of cousin Dessel passing i worked with him for a couple of year”s at the paper. after he retired i lost track of him along the way. just a couple thing that i remember was ethel”s pink car that she had and they lived over on fairmont ave here in town. May he rest in peace and oh one more Thank you for serving our great country Rest in peace!!!!
