Darrell R. “Squirrelly” Phelps, age 59, of Delaware passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at home following by a valiant battle against of cancer.

He was born April 5, 1954 in Lincoln County, West Virginia to Virgil and Normal (Adkins) Phelps. A diesel mechanic, he also worked as a plumber with his brother Wayne and the former Flexible Plumbing and Heating in Delaware.

A skilled mechanic, there was not anything he couldn’t fix. He had a passion for working on vintage automobiles and was currently restoring a 1962 Ford Falcon. He was a member of AMVETS Post 104. Darrell enjoyed playing poker and shooting pool. He also did a lot of swapping and trading after attending flea markets in the search of treasures.

Always full of energy, he was a true fighter, a wonderful husband and father who gave all that he had.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 20 years, Gail (Pittman), sons Darrell (Laura) Phelps Jr., Michael Plummer, Chad Plummer all of Delaware, 4 Grandchildren Mkayla, Dalton, Dakota, Drew, Great-grandson Kyle, 2 brothers, Dallas (Beverly) Phelps and Mark Phelps both of Ashley; 4 sisters, Deloris (Smokey) Carpenter of Saint Helen, Michigan, Billie Jo McKee of Delaware, Connie (Doug) Fuller of Edison, and Gail (Sam) Smith of Ashley; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers Wayne, Dale, Emmitt Phelps and an infant.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 – 5:00 pm at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 1510 W. William Street at Valleyside Drive, Delaware where Celebration of Life Services will follow at 5:00 pm with Pastor Richard McCalister.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the funeral home to help with final expenses.

  • This is my grandpa I didn’t really know him that well but I still knew him enough to love him it made me sad to hear about him dying because it was My Dad’s-dad and when I seen my dad he was very upset.I just wish I knew him more I wish I was able to spend time with him more when as was little I am 13 years old and I didn’t have very much time to spend with him but I know he loved me and I loved him and I still do.It was just sad to see my grandpa pass on because I didn’t really know him I wish I did though If I knew him more that would have meant a lot to me and him.
