Daniel R. Carr

September 08, 1924 ‒ January 14, 2010

Marion, Ohio

Daniel R. Carr, age 85, of Marion County, died early Thursday morning, January 14, 2010, at the Marion General Hospital following a brief illness.

On September 8, 1924, Dan was born in Marion County, the son of the late Daniel R. and Margaret M. (Schaber) Carr.

A WWII Veteran, Daniel proudly served his county in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class.

On January 1, 1949, Daniel married the love of his life, M. Louise Stone, in Greenup, Kentucky. Together they shared over 56 years of marriage before her passing on May 18, 2005.

Daniel wisely turned his military training into a very successful career. He began working for A.B. Cresap Electric and then spent over 30 years as an electrician for Erie Railroad, the company he retired from. He always looked forward to his monthly meetings with the other Erie Railroad retirees.

Daniel was a former member of the Lion’s Club in LaRue and the Elgin Athletic and Band Boosters. He also spent many summers coaching little league baseball in the LaRue area and was an avid bowler in Marion County.

In his earlier years, Daniel enjoyed hunting small game, especially rabbit, squirrel and pheasant.

With a love for traveling, Daniel would “go somewhere just to look at something.” Some of his favorite destinations were visiting family in Louisiana and attending his family reunions in Kentucky and Findlay.

A true Buckeye at heart, Daniel closely followed The Ohio State University football and basketball programs. He was also a huge fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals.

As a young boy, Daniel earned the nickname “Hap”, describing his “happy” personality. That name followed him the rest of his life. He also had another nickname, “Grandpa Carr with the red shirt,” due to his favorite color, red.

A family man, Daniel was an extremely loving and devoted father and husband. He had an especially fond place in his heart for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Patricia Carr of Springfield, Louisiana, and her children: Chantel (Cynthia) Hulsey-Flot, Angele (Patrick) Guy, and Christopher Carr; two sons: Jack (Deb) Carr of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, and their children: Daniel (Kristina) Carr, Becky Carr, and Andrew Carr, and Doug Carr of Marion, and his daughter Charlene Mercer; eleven great-grandchildren: Tailor and Tarah Hulsey, Teagan Flot, Elizabeth Raine Jarrell, Patricia Louise, Mary Gean, and Katherine Ariana Guy, Danielle and Colten Mercer, Lacey Harriger, and Elisabeth Carr; two brothers: Richard (Kate) Carr of Charleston, South Carolina, and Floyd (Bonnie) Carr of Indian Lake; two sisters: Donna Blair of Marion, and Lois (Robert) Kisor of Mansfield; a sister-in-law, Naomi Carr of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including his wife and parents, Daniel was preceded in death by three brothers: Franklin, Robert and Roger Carr; two sisters: Thelma Hogan, and Edris Spencer; three brothers-in-law: Virgil Blair, Dick Hogan, and Robert Spencer; and two sisters-in-law: Nancy Carr and Mae Carr.

The Carr family will greet friends from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, where services celebrating his life will be held on Monday at 11 a.m., with Doward Runyan officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Quality of Life Hospice, 278 Barks Road West, Marion, Ohio 43302.
