Daniel G. Barnes

August 26, 1946 ‒ January 29, 2015

Howard, Ohio

Daniel G. Barnes, age 68, of Howard passed away on Thursday evening, January 29, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on August 26, 1946 in Mount Vernon, son of Floyd Barnes of Mount Vernon and the late Ruth (Shultz) Barnes.

Dan was a 1965 graduate of Saint Vincent High School. He retired in 2005 with 34 years of service from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as the Lieutenant of the Civil Division and Fire Arms Instructor.  In his career with the Sheriff’s office, Dan was awarded the Deputy of the Year Award at least three times.  After retirement, Dan worked for the Snyder Funeral Homes and through this he formed many cherished friendships, very much appreciated the comradery of this wonderful organization and also found his “second son” Jeff.

Dan was man of few words, fastidious, always in control and a bit intimidating.  But, those who got to know and love him saw a heart of gold, generosity and a sense of humor.  He loved his children and grandchildren.  He would do anything for them; from hauling horses all over the state for horseshows, attending an enormous amount of basketball games and other sporting events to attending dance recitals in North Carolina, none of which were really his “thing”.  He loved NASCAR racing and attending races with his dear friend Tom Metcalf until Tom’s passing.  He also treasured his time at Eric and Heather’s Outer Bank beach house and wished we had more time to spend there.  He could not wait for spring to get into the woods to find mushrooms.

Dan is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Cathy (Campbell) Barnes; his father, Floyd; children Stephanie (Rod) Beach-Mowery of Howard and Eric (Heather) Beach of Wake Forest, NC; grandchildren, Elizabeth “Liz” and Brandon Beach of Howard, and Grace and Emma Beach of Wake Forest, NC;  brothers-in-law, Craig (Denice) Campbell and Curt (Donna) Campbell of Howard; and numerous friends.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2015 at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 with Pastor Ben McKinstry officiating.  Burial will follow in Workman Cemetery, Danville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Knox County Humane Society, 400 Columbus Rd., Mount Vernon, OH 43050 or Hospice of Knox County, 17700 Coshocton Rd., Mount Vernon, OH 43050 in Dan’s memory.

  • Cathy, Dan was a most thoughtful and efficient man. A professional guy, who was a delight to work with, and was my pleasure to get to know. You have my sympathy. I will always remember how Dan would be so serious, and then how his face would break into a big grin as he’d tell a joke or funny story…it took until you’d see that big smile that you knew he was pulling your leg. Dan was a fine gentleman. We miss him.
