Daniel Gray “Dan” Wetzel

July 05, 1956 ‒ March 18, 2020

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: On March 18, 2020, at The Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Dan Wetzel returned to the source from whence he had come. He arrived on July 5, 1956, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and his arrival brought great joy to both families, the maternal family of Violet Milnes Gray and the paternal family of William Diehl Wetzel. During his early years, Dan learned the allure of the fish lurking just beneath the surface of the waters of the “best fishin’ hole on the best trout stream east of the Mississippi,” the Penn’s Creek (according to his paternal grandfather, the noted trout stream entomologist, Charles M. Wetzel.) Later, in his adult years, Dan changed to bass and saltwater fishing in southern Florida where he would make time for house painting when he was able to get away from fishing!

Dan graduated from Madison Comprehensive High School and he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources and Labor Relations at The Ohio State University. Dan was an astute observer of the realm of nature. Dan loved camping where he could hear the running waters of the Clear Fork River. He could navigate with ease the intricate weavings of the water currents of The Everglades. Dan was a wit with a keen sense of humor. An avid reader, Dan enjoyed trying to best his mother at Jeopardy (which sometimes happened.)

Dan organized the 40th anniversary celebration of the Marco Island Center for the Arts in 2009, where his grandfather was a founder whose large work of paintings of Pennsylvania and Florida landscapes and those which documented Seminole history and individuals, were on exhibition.

Dan is survived by his parents; his sisters, Jane Wetzel Jako of Yellow Springs, OH, and Andrea (Jim) Holmes of Arlington, TX; his niece, Sarah Violet Jako of Yellow Springs; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins living across the country. Dan was dearly loved and will be missed.

There will be no formal services and his cremains will be scattered where he loved to be found, near his favorite fishin’ hole.

His family would like to thank the many health care providers who extended support to our Dan.

  • Mrs. Wetzel one of my favorite memories with Dan is a day him and I skipped school and got a ride from one of our Madison South teachers from the high school to South then walked to your house. You were at work but came home for lunch as we dove out a back window so you wouldn’t catch us. Now you know that you didn’t. We laughed and laughed all day long and talked about it often. And the time he wanted to jump off the roof though I laughingly told him not to. He did….. Love you all.

  • So sorry for your loss. Dan was a great guy and yes he had a wonderful unforgettable smile. I knew him and he was a part of our family for a long time. So many of us will cherish his memory

  • Dear Violet, Bill, Jane, Andy and Sarah,

I’m deeply sorry for Dan’s passing. I’ve been praying for you all, and think of you every day. I can’t imagine the hurt, and sheer sadness. I know Dan is at peace now. No more struggles, and that is a comfort.

Dan was always such the ‘big brother’ to Jane – blowing cigarette smoke in her hair just to torment her while he drove us to the school dance. Those memories make me laugh. He was also the kind big brother who put up with Jane’s giggly friends. My sister Laurie admitted he was the first guy she ever held hands with – in 6th grade, I think.

May God bless you all and provide comfort, peace and strength. May your best memories carry you through.

Love to the Wetzel family. You are ‘one-of-a-kind’ don’t you know?!

  • Dearest “Violent”,
I think I met Dan once or twice at your place but he left the room (was I intimidating?! giggle) shortly after I arrived.
I can tell by all of the sincere and wonderful compliments that his parents must have done a SUPER DUPER job in raising him. I am so sorry for your loss.
I have been thinking about coming up that way in June to my older sister’s 50th wedding anniversary open house but you can imagine that it’s on hold now. I will certainly let you know when the time comes.
I have wondered how you are and am thankful that I now have your new e-mail address.
I consider you a dear friend even though we aren’t in touch often. You, Violet, are woven into my being. Thinking about you makes my face and heart smile.
do take good care, air hugs, and safe keeping

  • Dear Friend/Sister Violet!
My heart is heavy in sorrow, for you, in the loss of your precious son, Danny. He had such a warm and loving smile, and this I will remember, along with so much more! I am grateful that our children were able to know each other when they were very young because this gives us such wonderful memories! May God grant you Grace, Mercy and Peace to you and your family!
    As always: Cynthia & Larry

  • Violet, Bill, and family,
My deepest sympathies on Dan’s passing.
My boys always remembered Dan from him taking them fishing in Marco, after that first trip he became “Dapper Dan the fishin man”. Even after they were grown with families of their own, that’s how they still referred to him when they would ask about him.
You all are in my thoughts, stay safe.

  • I’m Going To Miss Dan, Met Him When I Moved In The Neighborhood. And Became Friends. So Sorry For Your Loss Violet.Take Care And God Bless.

    • Rudy,

Thanks! You are a calming influence in the neighborhood. Dan said you are the best thing that has happened to this ‘hood in a long time!

  • As I’m sitting here during the corona virus quarantine I decided to read the obituaries. I have no idea why. But I came across this and read of a beautiful life that was really lived in a meaningful way. I would’ve loved to have known this man since he took hold of the ring and grabbed onto life’s very presence and shared it With his incredible wisdom (that so many forget) he absorbed in the beauty of nature. He enjoyed the prize.
So for now Dan its hats off to you and I hope to meet u one day. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and wish you profound peace. What awesome memories u must have.

  • Jane and family,
I’m so sorry to learn of your loss. I mainly knew Dan as your big brother but remember him as big personality with ready smile. My thoughts are with you all. Chris
