Dale Leon Van Fossen, age 85, of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday March 20, 2007 at his residence. Leon was born August 14, 1921 at Johnstown, Ohio to Donald D. and Vada (Saxton) Van Fossen and had spent his lifetime in Licking and Knox counties. He served with the United States Army 69th Infantry Division in Germany during World War Two. In 1983 Leon retired from Sears and Roebuck Company, where he had been employed for over 32 years as manager of the Automobile Department. He was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mount Vernon, a member of the Dan Stone Post of the American Legion in Mount Vernon, the Colonial City Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon and the Lions Club of Mount Vernon. Leon was an avid fisherman and hunter and was a member of the National Rifle Association.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife Marietta (Adams) Van Fossen whom he married July 12, 1946; his son Roger L. Van Fossen of Worthington; two daughters, Beth (David) Sheffer of Mount Vernon and Kay (Tom) Moreland of Centerburg; four grandchildren Melissa (William) Ho, D. Curtis (Brandie) Sheffer, Katelyn Moreland and Kara Moreland and a great grandchild, Whitney Ho. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Dennis J. Van Fossen and a brother Donald Keith Van Fossen.
Friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 PM. Rev. Dr. David Baker will be officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Southlawn Cemetery in Utica.
