Dale E. Smith, age 90, of Mount Vernon died Sunday morning, December 20, 2015 at the Country Court Nursing Center in Mount Vernon. He was born June 10, 1925 in Liberty Center, Henry County, Ohio son of the late Dan and Martha (Coleman) Smith.

Dale served his country honorably as a Combat Medic in the Army during WWII and received a Silver Star for valor in combat and a double Purple Heart.  He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Hill Church, the Order of Purple Heart and the 9th Infantry Association.  Dale was a masonry contractor and owned Smitty’s Carpet in Mount Vernon.

Dale is survived by his children, Roy (Kate) Smith, Ruth (Ted) Poland, and Rose (Terry) Brasseur all of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, James Smith, Richard Smith, Darren (Amy) Poland, Nathan Poland, Seth (Tiffany) Poland, Julie (John) Weber and Jason (Dawn) Trammell; great grandchildren, Kaydee Smith, Samuel Smith, Skyler Poland, Dalton Poland, Andrew Trammell, Autumn Trammell and Jessica Weber

In addition to his parents, Dale is preceded in death by his former wife, Lorraine Smith; brother, Charles Smith; and grandchildren, Richard Poland, Joy and Jennifer Trammell.

The family will receive friends from 5- 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home 619 East High St, Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 with Pastor Fred Shoemaker officiating.  Burial will follow in Skeen Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
