D. Eugene “Gene” Lehner
October 17, 1928 ‒ January 30, 2010
D. Eugene “Gene” Lehner, age 81, of Benzler-Lust Rd. in Marion, died late Saturday evening, January 30, 2010, at the Kingston Residence following an extended illness.
On October 17, 1928, Gene was born at home on the farm, the son of the late Harry and Elsie (Seitter) Lehner. He graduated from Pleasant High School in the Class of 1946, where he excelled in basketball.
Growing up on the family farm, Gene began helping his father and brothers as soon as he was able. He quickly found he had a deep appreciation for their land and knew he wanted to carry on his family’s farming tradition when he grew older. From there, “farming, farming, and farming” was his life and he dedicated himself to his farm throughout his entire life.
Gene was a member of the Pleasant Adult Farmer’s Association and the Pleasant Booster Club. Also, for sixteen years he served as a Pleasant Township Trustee.
A man of faith, Gene was an active member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waldo, where he served as a trustee and on the church council.
In his usual outgoing way, Gene had met Joyce Allen at his restaurant. The two were married soon thereafter on March 15, 1964, and have enjoyed over forty five years of marriage.
With his love for the outdoors, Gene began taking an annual fishing trip to Bruce Mines, Canada, when he was eighteen years old. Every year he looked forward to this vacation with his family, and it was often the only vacation for the entire year. He also enjoyed deer hunting with his friends.
Known for being “a card,” Gene truly had a great sense of humor and his ornery streak often had everyone in stitches.
A “laid back” and “patient” man, Gene loved to be surrounded by his beloved family.
Gene will be dearly missed by his wife, Joyce Lehner of Marion; five children: Michael (Rita) Lehner of Marion, Steven (Rosemary) Lehner of Hudson, Stephanie Hughes of Marion, Tracie (Richard) Wilson of Marion, and Dustin (Susan) Lehner of Loveland; seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn (Sue) Lehner of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Gene was preceded in death by two brothers: Henry and Robert Lehner; and a sister, Ruth Shellhorn.
The Lehner family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waldo, with Pastor Sarah Schaaf officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery.
Pallbearers serving in Gene’s honor will be: Mike Smith, Tim Tipsword, Darrell Lehner, Adam Lehner, Steven Lehner, Reed Wilson, Austin Hughes, and Andrew Croman.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 135 Main St., Waldo, Ohio 43356, or to Marion General Hospice, 278 Barks Rd. W., Marion, Ohio 43302.
