February 02, 1922 ‒ May 26, 2012
Cornie Sutherland, age 90, of Marengo and formerly of Cardington, died peacefully on Saturday afternoon, May 26, 2012, at the Bennington Glen Care Center in Marengo surrounded by her loving family.
On February 2, 1922, Cornie was born in Colley, Virginia, one of twelve children of the late Basil and Lillie (Yates) Edwards.
Shortly after having met a young man, Kellis Sutherland, they were married soon thereafter on June 23, 1939, in Bee, Virginia. They shared over 56 years together and raised six children. He preceded her in death on September 14, 1995.
In 1953, Cornie and Kellis moved their family to Ohio, where he found work at the H.P.M. Corporation in Mount Gilead. For nearly 10 years, she also worked at Nickerson Farms as a cook.
A loving homemaker, Cornie always made sure her family was well taken care of. Having two or three warms meals a day was nothing unusual for them, and she even made sure Kellis had his biscuits and gravy every morning. She especially enjoyed their family get-togethers, and she would spend all day in the kitchen getting ready for them. She cherished every moment when she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
A woman of deep faith, Cornie was a member of the Owl Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Waterford. She truly “loved her church” and everyone in it.
With a love for quilting, Cornie made at least one afghan or quilt for her children and grandchildren.
An avid yard saler, Cornie would go all over every Friday morning in her Volkswagon Bug in search of yard sales and deals. She had a group of friends she would often meet up with at these yard sales.
Having a green thumb, Cornie could grow just about anything and even had a knack for pulling off sprouts to grow and sell from her house.
A truly “good woman”, Cornie was “everyone’s friend” and always had time to listen to your troubles and your triumphs. She had countless dear friends, many of whom she would speak with daily over the phone. Her family never can recall her ever speaking a harsh word about anyone.
She will be dearly missed by her five children: Jane (Joe) Green of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Sue (Ted) Deel of Marengo, Kenneth (Elaine) Sutherland of Marion, Lili Teresa Fravel of Sunbury, and Jeff (Donna) Sutherland of Lancaster, South Carolina; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; two surviving sisters: Wilma Thomas of California, and Sybil Mullins of Green Cove Springs, Florida; and oodles of nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Cornie was preceded in death by her son, Mitchell “Don” Sutherland; and ten siblings: Allen, Dallas, Clinton, Lassie, Leslie, and Ceaphus Edwards, Brownie Compton, Zora Powers, Ollie Colley, and Flossie Owens.
The Sutherland family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her homecoming will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Owl Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 7397 County Road 22, Waterford, Ohio, with Elders Jack Griffith and Darwin Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Northfork Cemetery behind the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Owl Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
