Clarence “Sonny” Benson Jr, 81, of Mount Vernon, passed away with his loving family by his side. He was born July 8, 1937, in Fulton, the son of Clarence Sr. and Esther (Hall) Benson.

Clarence served in The United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He was stationed in London, England where he met and married Mary Hamilton. Upon returning home from the service he operated Benson’s SOHIO for 13 years. He retired from Ryder Truck Rental in 1996.

He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan and Cincinnati Reds. He also loved to bowl and did bowl a perfect game of 300.

He is survived by his wife Mary “Molly” (Hamilton) Benson whom he married April 20, 1957; daughter Debbie (Todd) Dygert of Galloway; son Gary (Diane) Benson of Utica; daughter Cathy (Steve) Pattison of Bladensburg; Kim (Darius) Miller of Canal Winchester; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters Judy (Jerry) Rollison of Campwood, TX; Patricia (David) Cline of Mount Vernon; numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a niece Sherry Rollison of McLean, TX.

Family and friends may call Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dowds Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, where a memorial service will begin at 1 p.m.  Pastor Mark Wildermuth will be officiating. A repast dinner wilł follow at Faith Lutheran Church 170 Mansfield Avenue. A private burial will be at a later date.
